MARSHALL, Minn. –The Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team (12-10, 7-10 NSIC) held off MSU Moorhead (16-8, 9-6 NSIC) for a 66-61 victory on Friday night in the R/A Facility.
Jenna Borchers led the battle, pouring in a team-high 18 points while
Meleah Reinhart and
Madison Gehloff added 12.
The Mustangs shot 39 percent from the field (22-of-57) and 33 percent from the 3-point line (7-of-21) while the Dragons finished with 39 percent from the field (24-of-61) and 25 percent from the 3-point line (5-of-20).
The Mustangs climbed to so-much-as a nine-point lead in the first quarter to record a 21-point first quarter.
The Mustangs led until Madi Green, who finished the night with 10 points, hit a jumper with 7:41 left in the second to take a one-point advantage. Reinhart took it back in the next possession to score a layup of her own to regain the lead once again.
Abuk Akoi, who finished with six points and a team-high 11 rebounds, went for a layup to advance the lead, helped the Mustangs finish the first half with a 32-27 lead.
The open the third quarter,
Sadie Stelter hit a three-pointer, followed back-to-back with one from Borchers to go up by nine points once again.
The Mustangs earned their first double-digit lead of the game as Gehloff striped the ball from the Dragons and took it to the hoop for a fast-break layup for a 43-33 lead with 6:18 to go in the third.
In the fourth, the Dragons would head to the line twice in a thirty second period, followed by a layup, would put the Mustangs up with a two-point lead with 1:06 to go in the game.
The game was won at the line in the final minute as Borchers and Teske both went to the line to secure the 66-61 victory for the Mustangs.
The Dragons were led in scoring by Megan Hintz who finished with 16 points.
Southwest Minnesota State will host Northern State on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the R/A Facility for the annual "Hawaiian Night."
