MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State had four players reach double figures in scoring and shot 60 percent from the field in earning a 78-55 victory over St. Olaf College in an exhibition men's college basketball game on Friday night inside the R/A Facility.
Kenny Byers, who sat out last season, returned to pace the Mustangs with 16 points on 5 of 9 shooting and dished out a team-high four assists.
Dunwa Omot connected on three 3-pointers and finished scoring 15 points to help in the victory.
Anthony Costello, a transfer from Dakota State University, made 6 of 12 field goals and poured in 14 points.
Jake Phipps was the other Mustang in double-figure scoring with 11 points on 5 of 9 shooting.
SMSU forced St. Olaf into 21 turnovers, leading to 31 points and held a 31-22 rebound advantage. The Mustangs outscored the Oles 42-18 in points in the paint.
SMSU finished the game making 29 of 51 field goals, including 7 of 17 from 3-point range.
Charlie Huff led the Oles with 18 points. St. Olaf closed the game shooting 42 percent (17 of 41) from the field, including 6 of 15 from 3-point range.
Southwest Minnesota State opens the regular season on Nov. 12 taking on Rogers State (Okla.) at the Concordia-St. Paul Classic.
