MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's swimming & diving team continued its winning ways on Thursday afternoon earning a 140-90 victory over MSU Moorhead inside the Don Palm Natatorium.
It was the first-ever victory for SMSU over MSUM following losses in both the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.
SMSU is now 5-1 in duals this season, while MSUM drops to 2-1.
SMSU picked up its first victory in dual in the 200-yard freestyle as
Quincie Klein won with a time of 2:01.58. Klein also won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:32.15
MacKenzie Kallevig secured a first-place time of 25.02 in the 50-yard freestyle with teammate
Maija Geier placing second at 25.66. Kallevig also won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.94 with Geier finishing in second place at 55.28.
Annika Freiburger picked up a first-place finish for the Mustangs in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:31.24
Natalie Bohnert earned a hard-fought victory in the 200-yard butterfly touching the wall at 2:14.30, just ahead of MSUM's Katelin Winter at 2:14.40. Bohnert earned a second-place time in the 200-yard backstroke at 2:14.33 with
Abbie Christensen finishing third at 2:16.47 and Julianna Villa in fourth place at 2:17.49.
Kendyl Near finished second in the 100-yard IM with
Addi Schroeder placing fourth at 1:06.17.
SMSU's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Kallevig, Villa, Bohnert and Geier earned a thrilling victory with a time of 1:41.87, just ahead of MSUM at 1:41.95.
SMSU had the only two divers compete in the dual with
Sarah McDonald finishing with a score of 193.2 in 1-meter diving with
Sheyann Bertschinger in second place at 170.85. McDonald racked up a score of 191.65 in 3-meter diving with Bertschinger earning 182.65.
Southwest Minnesota State continues competition at home on Saturday with a 1 p.m. triangular with Augsburg and Concordia-St. Paul.
