•The Southwest Minnesota State University men's basketball team (3-1) travels to Sioux Falls, S.D., to open Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Tuesday night with a match-up versus the University of Sioux Falls. Game time is set for 7:35 p.m. inside USF's Stewart Center.
•Tuesday's game will be SMSU's 800th conference game in program history. SMSU begins its 53rd season as a member of the NSIC and has an all-time record of 378-421 in 799 conference games, finishing in the top half of the final standings 25 times in 52 seasons.
•Both teams enter the game with three-game winning streaks. USF started its streak with a victory over No. 1 Northwest Missouri State on Nov. 13.

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS SIOUX FALLS
•SMSU and Sioux Falls meet for the 38th time on Tuesday with SMSU leading 22-15 in a series that started in 1968-69.
•USF leads the series 12-5 in games played in Sioux Falls, including the last game played inside the Stewart Center, 74-56 on Nov. 30, 2019.
•SMSU has won seven of the last 12 games since Dec. 19, 2015, but USF has won three of the last four and five of the last eight.
•The teams split two games last season in Marshall to close the season with USF winning 61-52 on Feb. 20, but SMSU rallied to win 76-69 in overtime on Feb. 21.

Brad Bigler, the all-time wins leader in program history, is in his 13th season as head coach and has an overall record of 193-154, including 128-119 in NSIC play.
•The 2012-13 and 2016-17 NSIC Coach of the Year, Bigler has led SMSU to seven winning seasons, including one 28-win season, one 25-win season and two 19-win seasons.
•SMSU won NSIC Tournament titles in 2012 and 2017 and won back-to-back NSIC South Division championships in 2016-17 and 2017-18.
•SMSU has played in five NSIC Tournament championship games during his tenure (2010, 2012, 2017, 2018, 2019).

SMSU EARNS TWO VICTORIES IN WISCONSIN
•SMSU concluded pre-conference play earning a pair of victories last weekend at the Wisconsin-Parkside Classic in Kenosha, Wis. SMSU opened the weekend defeating Parkside, 69-60, before earning a 73-63 win over Davenport (Mich.)
•In the win over Parkside,
Kenny Byers poured in 26 points on 10 of 16 shooting, while
Jake Phipps recorded his first career double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
•SMSU closed the game shooting 54 percent (29 of 54) from the field, while limiting Parkside (2-1) to 38 percent shooting (21 of 55). The Mustangs shot 67 percent (16 of 24) in the second half to pull away from a halftime tie.
•In Saturday's win over Davenport, Phipps recorded his second consecutive double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds while
Dunwa Omot came off the bench to score a career-high 16 points with four 3-pointers.
•SMSU, which trailed 36-28 at halftime, made six 3-pointers in the final 20 minutes in earning its third straight win.
•Phipps scored 20 or more points for the second time in his career and closed the game making 9 of 13 shots with a pair of 3-pointers, while also adding three steals, three assists and two blocked shots.

SMSU SETS PROGRAM SINGLE-GAME RECORD
•This year's Mustang team set a program single-game record in the victory over Newman on Nov. 13 connecting on all 15 free throw attempts in the 84-58 victory. The previous single-game record was a 14 for 14 performance versus Minnesota Crookston Jan. 18, 2002.
PHIPPS EARNS NSIC WEEKLY AWARD FOR FIRST TIME
•SMSU sophomore
Jake Phipps on Monday was named the NSIC South Division Player of the Week following his play in a pair of SMSU victories this past weekend in Kenosha, Wis.
•Phipps averaged 18 points, 11.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 2.0 blocked shots in SMSU's victories over Wisconsin-Parkside and Davenport (Mich.). He shot a combined 64 percent (16 of 25) from the field, including connecting on three 3-pointers during the two games.
•Phipps opened the weekend scoring 15 points on 7 of 12 shooting and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds in recording his first career double-double in SMSU's 69-60 win over Parkside on Friday.
•In SMSU's come-from-behind 73-63 victory on Saturday, he scored a game-high 21 points on 9 of 13 shooting and made a pair of 3-pointers. He notched his second straight double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds and added three steals and two blocked shots.
SCOUTING SIOUX FALLS
•Sioux Falls is 3-1 on the season and has won three straight games, including earning an 83-77 victory over No. 1 Northwest Missouri State on Nov. 13.
•The Cougars defeated Dakota State and Chadron State last week.
•Matt Cartwright, a transfer from Augustana, is averaging 24 points with 12 3-pointers this season.
•Sophomore Jack Thompson (14.3) and junior Chase Grinde (11.3) both are scoring in double figures.
•Redshirt freshman Wesley Oba is grabbing a team-high 7.5 rpg.
•USF is shooting 45 percent from the field, 36 percent from 3-point range, 73 percent from the free throw line and is plus-4.5 in rebound margin.
•USF is averaging 76 points per game, while opponents are averaging 73 points per game.
•Head coach Chris Johnson is in his 14th season at USF with a record of 227-157. He was also head coach at Culver-Stockton for one season (2004-05).
SMSU PICKED 7TH IN NSIC PRESEASON POLL
•SMSU was picked to finish 13th overall and seventh in the South Division in the 16-team NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll.

Kenny Byers was named a "Player to Watch".
•Minnesota State and Wayne State each were chosen as the South Division favorites. MSU Moorhead was selected as the overall preseason favorite.
NEW LOOK NSIC FORMAT TOURNAMENT
•SMSU is set to play 22 conference games this season, including two versus each team within the NSIC South Division and one each versus the NSIC North Division.
•New this season, the men's teams will play first, followed by the women's game in half of the NSIC doubleheaders.
•Also new this season, the NSIC Sanford Tournament will feature just 12 teams, with the top six in each division qualifying for the tournament. The top two teams in each division receive a spot in the quarterfinals.
•The quarterfinals, semifinals and championship game will all be played at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.
KENNY BYERS RETURNS IN 2021-22
•Senior
Kenny Byers, who sat out all of last season, returns to the team this season after earning second team All-NSIC in 2019-20.
•Byers led SMSU in nearly every offensive category two seasons ago averaging a team-high 16.3 points per game and ranked first on the team with 6.9 rebounds per game.
•He was the team leader in both assists (95) and steals (43) and closed the season shooting 44.9 percent (180 of 401) from the field and 70.5 percent (86 of 122) from the free throw line.
•In NSIC play, Byers ranked fifth in the league in steals (1.5), 10th in scoring (17.3), 12th in rebounding (6.7), 12th in assists (3.5), 16th in assist/turnover ratio (1.1), 18th in field goal percentage (45.0) and 19th in free throw percentage (75.2).
