SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The No. 5 seed Southwest Minnesota State University women's tennis team earned four victories in singles play to earn a 4-1 victory over No. 4 seed University of Mary in the quarterfinals of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament on Friday night inside Huether Family Match Pointe.
The NSIC Tournament victory, the programs first since defeating Upper Iowa in the quarterfinals in 2009, moves SMSU into the semifinals to face top-seeded Augustana at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
AU, which defeated SMSU 7-0 on April 14, has won the past nine NSIC Tournament championships. Winona State and MSU Moorhead will be the other semifinal match-up on Saturday morning. The tournament championship will be at 12 p.m. on Saturday with champion earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
In Friday's win, the Mustangs trailed 1-0 as the Marauders earned the team point following the three doubles matches.
Gwendolen Sior and
Cora Delich picked up a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, but SMSU's No. 1 doubles squad of
Maegan Flight and
Courtenay Leonard along with SMSU's No. 3 duo of
Maja Louisa Harck and
Silvia Poulakidas both lost by scores of 6-4.
SMSU made a big turnaround in singles play to earn the match victory. Flight picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1 with Leonard earning a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2. Delich cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4, while Poulakidas helped secure the team victory with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6. Harck's match at No. 3 went unfinished in the third set as did Sior's match at No. 4 in the second set.
