AU builds early lead to complete sweep over SMSU

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana University, ranked as high as No. 9 nationally, completed a three-game sweep over Southwest Minnesota State University on Sunday earning a 10-3 victory in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference baseball at Ronken Field.
 
The three-game series was originally scheduled to be played in Marshall but was relocated due to field conditions.
 
Augustana finished the game with 14 hits and to control of the game with big innings early in the game.
 
The Vikings (25-6-1, 15-3 NSIC) scored four runs in the top of the second to build an early lead before the Mustangs answered in the home half with a single run.
 
Owen Latendresse and Max Kalenberg started the rally for the Mustangs with back-to-back walks before Robbie Smith ripped a run-scoring single to make the score 4-1. Despite having runners on first and second and no outs, SMSU failed to score again with a fly out, strikeout and fly out ending the threat.  
 
AU added to the lead one inning later plating three more runs in the third to take a 7-1 lead and then put the game away with another three-run inning in the fourth to build a 10-1 advantage.
 
The score remained 10-1 until the eighth when Jaxon Haase belted a two-run home run over the left field fence for his second home run of the season.  
 
The Mustangs finished the game with five hits as Haase finished 2 for 4, while Chase McDaniel, Smith and Andy Andresen each had one hit.
 
Ansen Dulas (1-2) started on the mound for the Mustangs and allowed seven runs (six earned) in three innings with two strikeouts and two walks. Sam Nascak, the fourth of six SMSU pitchers in the game, tied a career-high with three shutout innings. Cameron Jensen and Jerod Cyrus both fired a scoreless inning in the eighth and ninth inning respectively.  
 
The Mustangs, which drop to 8-18 overall, 1-13 NSIC, are scheduled to resume action at St. Cloud State University next Friday and Saturday for a three-game series.
