SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Southwest Minnesota State University baseball team lost two games to Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday afternoon, dropping game one, 10-0, before losing 3-1 in game two. The two games were played at Bishop Mueller Field on the campus of Briar Cliff Univeristy due to poor field conditions in Marshall.
In the opener, Luke DeGrammont tossed a two-hit shutout for the Golden Bears with seven strikeouts and three walks. CSP finished the game with 13 hits and were led by Nick Thimsen, who went 4 for 4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
In game two, SMSU out-hit CSP, 7-6, but the Mustangs left 11 runners on base.
CSP improves to 13-9 overall, 7-3 NSIC, while SMSU falls to 8-12 overall, 1-7 NSIC.
In game one, CSP opened the scoring with a big second inning plating six runs on five hits, an error and a walk.
SMSU took advantage of three walks to load the bases with one out in the second, but a strikeout and foul out ended the threat.
The Golden Bears added to the lead in the third with two more runs on four hits to build an 8-0 advantage and chase Mustang starting pitcher
Kolby Kiser.
Keenan Wenzel and
Robbie Smith had the two hits for the Mustangs, who were shutout for the second time this season.
Kiser (0-4) lasted 2 1/3 innings allowing eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
Avery Stevens pitched two innings of relief, while
Craig Lasley fired a career-high 2 1/3 shutout innings of relief.
In game two, CSP scored the game's first run via a bad-hop. CSP's Bryce Nelson singled to center field leading-off the third inning and on the play the ball took a bad-hop past centerfielder
Andy Andresen and rolled all the way to the fence for a triple. One batter a later a sac fly by Justin McGuigan gave the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead.
The scored remained 1-0 until the seventh when CSP plated another run on a two-out wild pitch allowing a runner to score from third and push the margin to 2-0. The lead would grow to 3-0 in the ninth with a run scoring on a passed ball.
SMSU rallied in the ninth with
Chase McDaniel slashing an RBI double to cut the deficit to 3-1 and score Smith. However, with runners at second and third, a line out and ground out ended the game.
Ryan Chmielewski (2-3) started for SMSU and pitched well, firing a career-high tying 6 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on five hits with one strikeout.
Brady Petron tossed a career-high 2 1/3 innings out of the bullpen and struck out four while allowing one run.
The two teams conclude the series on Sunday with a single-game at 12 p.m.
