SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Concordia-St. Paul scored four unearned runs in the fourth to rally from an early deficit and then used a seven-run sixth inning to pull away and earn a 14-4 victory over Southwest Minnesota State University in NSIC college baseball on Sunday afternoon.
Sunday's win gave CSP a sweep of the three-game series that was played at Bishop Mueller Field on the campus of Briar Cliff University. The series was originally scheduled to be played at Legion Field in Marshall, but was relocated due to field conditions.
CSP took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a solo home run from Matt Pietsch.
SMSU (8-13, 1-8 NSIC) took the lead in the home half of the second with a big two-out rally.
Andy Andresen started the rally with a single and was followed by a
Kip Gronholz single.
Caleb Gardow and
Jackson Bates hit back-to-back run-scoring singles before the third run of the inning scored on a balk to push the Mustang lead to 3-1.
SMSU maintained the lead into the fourth before CSP took advantage of a dropped foul ball to score four unearned runs, using four straight two-out singles, to regain the lead at 5-3.
CSP (14-9, 8-3 NSIC) would add two more in the fifth and three more in the seven more to blow the game open.
Ansen Dulas (1-1) started on the mound for the Mustangs and struck out six in four-plus innings, allowing seven hits and six runs (two earned) with two walks.
Andresen and
Jaxon Haase led SMSU's nine-hit offense with a pair of hits, while
Chase McDaniel,
Owen Latendresse, Gronholz, Gardow and Bates each had one.
SMSU will look to open its home season on Wednesday afternoon taking on Minnesota State at Legion Field with a doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m.
