SMSU holds off CSP to earn big home victory

MARSHALL, Minn. -- The Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team moved back into the win column on Friday night defeating Concordia-St. Paul 64-62 inside the R/A Facility.

CSP, which drops to 7-2 overall, 3-1 NSIC, had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds but a shot missed off the side of the glass as time expired.

SMSU snaps a two-game losing streak with the win and improves to 3-6 overall, 2-2 NSIC.

Bri Stoltzman led SMSU with 26 points on 10 of 19 shooting, while also grabbing six rebounds. Madison Gehloff was the only other Mustang to reach double-figure scoring with 12 points, while pulling down a team-high seven rebounds. Hannah Parsley collected a team-high three steals, while grabbing five rebounds and scoring seven points.

SMSU opened the game scoring the first six points off two Stoltzman jumpers and a Blandin layup. The next four points would go the way of the Golden Bears before the Mustangs drilled a 3-pointer and scored a layup on the following possession to take a 11-4 lead with 4:27 left in quarter one. CSP pushed the score to 11-10 with just over two minutes left in the period when again SMSU responded with five points to close the quarter with the lead at 16-12.

The Mustangs finished the game shooting 36 percent (21 of 59) from the field with six 3-pointers in 23 attempts. 

SMSU outscored CSP 17-11 in the second quarter. Buckets from Kenzie Jones and Madison Gehloff kept the Mustangs afloat throughout the quarter, leading by as many as 11 points with just 2:33 remaining in the half. The Mustangs led the Golden Bears 33-23 going into the second half.

Ally Gietzel led the Golden Bears with 27 points on 11 of 18 shooting with seven rebounds. CSP closed the game shooting 40 percent (25-62) from the field with two 3-pointers on eight attempts.

The second half of play was back-and-forth play with SMSU striking first on a layup by Gehloff. The Golden Bears out-shot the Mustangs in the second half 51 percent to 33 percent. CSP used a 14-7 run for the first seven minutes of the half to bring the score back to a one point game. Sam Wall sparked a run on the opposite end with a jumper from 12 feet to outscore CSP 6-5 to close the quarter.

SMSU kicked off the fourth quarter with a three-minute run to force a CSP timeout at a score of 52-46. CSP drilled consecutives threes to bring themselves within one point for the final time, but the Mustangs wouldn't go away, scoring the next eight of ten points to lead the game 60-53 with just under two minutes remaining.

CSP scored consecutive layups late in the game to bring the score to 62-60. Stoltzman hit both free throws with 21 seconds remaining before CSP's Megan Gamble got a layup to go with 13 seconds left. CSP missed its final shot to tie the game.
