SMSU returns to NSIC South Division with two road games

    THIS WEEK
•The Southwest Minnesota State University men's basketball team (13-8, 9-7 NSIC) continues a four-game road swing this weekend returning to NSIC South Division play with a pair of games on Friday and Saturday.
•SMSU will battle Minnesota State University (14-8, 8-8 NSIC) on Friday night with tip-off slated for 5:30 p.m. inside the Taylor Center in Mankato, before traveling to St. Paul, Minn., on Saturday to take on Concordia-St. Paul (6-16, 4-12 NSIC) with game time slated for 3:30 p.m. at the Gangehloff Center.
•SMSU, which lost two games last weekend, has won nine of its last 14 games and is currently fourth place in the NSIC South Division standings. MSU is fifth in the NSIC South Division standings, while CSP is in eighth place.
•SMSU defeated both MSU and CSP earlier this season in Marshall with SMSU earning a 62-58 win over MSU and a 67-63 victory over CSP. Box scores from both games this season can be found on pages 19-20.

•All games will be broadcast on 105.1 FM KARL with Ryan Rohlik providing play-by-play.

    SMSU HEAD COACH BRAD BIGLER
Brad Bigler, the all-time wins leader in program history, is in his 14th season as head coach and has an overall record of 218-173, including 147-136 in NSIC play.  
•The 2012-13 and 2016-17 NSIC Coach of the Year, Bigler has led SMSU to seven winning seasons, including one 28-win season, one 25-win season and two 19-win seasons.
•SMSU won NSIC Tournament titles in 2012 and 2017 and won back-to-back NSIC South Division championships in 2016-17 and 2017-18.  
•SMSU has played in five NSIC Tournament championship games during his tenure (2010, 2012, 2017, 2018, 2019).
•SMSU's 11th head coach, Bigler spent six seasons (2003-09) as an assistant coach at SMSU, including the last three as associate head coach.
•SMSU's 71 combined victories from 2016-19 was the best three-year stretch in program history.

    MUSTANGS BY THE NUMBERS
•SMSU leads the NSIC (league games only) in scoring defense (64.6) and opponent field goal pct. (40.3) while ranking second in 3-point field goal pct. defense (31.0) and second in free throw pct. (78.8).
Dunwa Omot ranks first in the NSIC (league games only) in free throw pct. (88.5) and 14th in scoring (16.3), Jake Phipps ranks eighth in rebounding (6.8) and third in blocked shots (1.3), Majok Majouk ranks tied for fourth in blocked shots (1.1), while Cliff McCray is fourth in steals (1.6).
•For the season, SMSU has three players averaging double figures in scoring with sophomore Dunwa Omot leading the way at 16.5 ppg while connecting on a team-high 37 3-pointers while ranking second with 26 steals.
•Junior Jake Phipps is scoring 11.7 ppg, while shooting 55 percent from the field and leading the team averaging 6.8  rebounds per game.
•Senior Anthony Costello is averaging 11.5 ppg and has made 27 3-pointers.
•Junior Cliff McCray is scoring 8.0 ppg and has dished out a team-leading 67 assists.
•SMSU is shooting 46 percent from the field, 34 percent from 3-point range, 78 percent from the free throw line and is plus-2.2 in rebound margin. The Mustangs are averaging 68 points per game, while opponents are averaging 64 ppg.

    MUSTANG TIP-OFF TIDBITS
•Senior Anthony Costello reached an individual milestone at Bemidji State on Jan. 27, scoring his 1,000th career point. He scored 551 points in 52 games at Dakota State (2018-20) and has scored 468 points in 48 games at SMSU (2021-23). He has scored 1,019 career points in 100 career games.
•SMSU's 12 3-pointers made in last Friday's loss at Bemidji State was its second highest total this season.
Noah Chamberlain grabbed a career-high nine rebounds last Friday at Bemidji State.
Dunwa Omot scored 27 and 28 points in SMSU's two victories versus St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth two weeks ago. He is the first Mustang to score 25 or more points in back-to-back games since Ryan Bruggeman reached the mark eight straight times during the 2018-19 season.
•SMSU is limiting opponents to 39.9 percent shooting from the field and 30.3 percent from 3-point range this season with both currently ranking first in team single-season history. SMSU is allowing 63.5 points per game ranking as the third-lowest in team history. The 2006-07 team holds the single-season record at 61.4 ppg, while the 2008-09 team held teams to 62.2 ppg.
•In the Division II national statistics (Jan. 31), SMSU ranks 12th in free throw pct. (78.1), 13th in field goal pct. defense (39.9), 16th in fouls per game (13.7), 17th in scoring defense (63.5), and 20th in 3-point field goal pct. defense (30.3). Sophomore Dunwa Omot ranks 32nd in free throw pct. (88.0).
•Junior Jake Phipps ranks fifth in team history in field goal pct. (56.2, 386 of 687) and is fourth in blocked shots (103). He is two blocked shots shy of tying Chad Koenen (1998-2002) for third all-time at 105.
•Omot ranks first in team history in free throw pct. (87.8, 108 of 123) and is second in 3-point field goal pct. (46.8, 94 of 201). Omot's 56.6 3-point field goal pct. (56 of 99) last season set a program single-season record, while his 87.5 free throw pct. ranks seventh in team single-season history.
•SMSU's eight home victories this season is the program's highest since winning 12 in 2018-19.

    MUSTANGS LOSE A PAIR OF GAMES LAST WEEKEND
•SMSU dropped a pair of road games last weekend, losing to Bemidji State, 83-76, and Minnesota Crookston, 71-63.
Dunwa Omot led the Mustangs in the loss to BSU with 22 points and four 3-pointers, while Anthony Costello added 18 points and four 3-pointers.
•In the loss to UMC, the Mustangs scored just four points in the final 11 minutes, as the Golden Eagles rallied from a 13-point second half deficit.
•Omot scored a team-high 18 points for SMSU with Costello and Jake Phipps each scoring 12 points.

    SERIES HISTORY VERSUS MINNESOTA STATE
•SMSU and MSU meet for the 69th time with MSU leading 48-20 in a series that started in 1969-70.
•MSU leads 24-9 in games played in Mankato, but SMSU won last season, 71-69 in overtime.
•SMSU, which won 62-58 earlier this season in Marshall, has won three straight in the series for the first time ever.
•MSU has won 16 of the last 23 games overall since the 2012-13 season.
•SMSU head coach Brad Bigler is 10-20 all-time versus MSU.

    SERIES HISTORY VERSUS CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL
•SMSU and CSP meet for the 47th time with SMSU leading 32-14 in a series that began during the 1980-81 season.
•SMSU has won 15 of the last 22 games since Feb. 11, 2011, but CSP has won four of the last six games. SMSU won earlier this season in Marshall, 67-63.
•SMSU is 13-9 all-time in games played in St. Paul, with SMSU's win last season snapping a two-game losing streak at CSP.
•SMSU head coach Brad Bigler is 15-10 all-time versus CSP.

    SCOUTING MINNESOTA STATE
•MSU snapped a four-game losing streak last Saturday and is 14-8 overall, 8-8 NSIC.
•Junior guard Malik Willingham is averaging a team-high 18.2 points with a team-leading 86 assists while making a team-high 61 3-pointers. Younger brother, sophomore guard Kyreese Willingham is averaging 13.5 ppg with 34 3-pointers.
•Senior guard Trevor Moore ranks second on the team with 54 3-pointers and is scoring 15 ppg.
•MSU is shooting 46 percent from the field, 37 percent from 3-point range, 72 percent from the free throw line and is plus-4.1 in rebound margin.
•MSU is averaging 79 points per game, while opponents are averaging 74 points per game.
•Head coach Matt Margenthaler is in his 22nd season with a record of 450-205.
 
    SCOUTING CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL
•The Golden Bears are 6-16 overall, 4-12 NSIC, and have won two straight and three of their last five. CSP will host Sioux Falls on Friday night.
•Sophomore guard Antwan Kimmons is averaging 20.8 ppg and has dished out a team-high 92 assists with a team-high 28 steals. He also leads the team with 5.9 rpg.
•Sophomore guard Marcus Skeete is averaging 12.7 ppg, has made a team-leading 31 3-pointers and is averaging a team-high 5.9 rpg.
•CSP is shooting 45 percent from the field, 36 percent from 3-point range, 73 percent from the free throw line and is minus-3.5 in rebound margin.
•CSP is averaging 73 points per game, while opponents are averaging 79 points per game.
•Head coach Matt Fletcher is in his third season with a record of 10-54. He previously was the head coach at Bethany Lutheran for four seasons (2016-20) with a record of 76-33.
•Fletcher played four seasons at SMSU and closed his career holding the program record for 3-pointers made and free throw percentage.
 
    OMOT NAMED NSIC SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK
•SMSU sophomore guard Dunwa Omot was named the NSIC South Division Player of the Week on Jan. 23. He averaged 27.5 points and 7.0 rebounds, while shooting 54.8 percent (17 of 31) from the field, including 7 of 14 from 3-point range to help SMSU earn victories over St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth.

    MUSTANG CAREER 20-POINT GAMES  
•Three SMSU players, senior Anthony Costello,  junior Jake Phipps and sophomore Dunwa Omot have scored 20 or more points in a game during their careers.
•Omot has reached the mark seven times this season and eight times in his career, Phipps has reached 20 points twice this season and eight times in his career, while Costello has two 20-point games this season.

    NSIC SOUTH VS. NSIC NORTH
•SMSU is a combined 47-31 versus North Division teams in conference play since divisions were introduced prior to the 2012-13 season, including finishing 4-4 this season.
•SMSU finished with 3-3 mark versus NSIC North Division teams in 2021-22. SMSU was 3-5 versus the NSIC North in 2019-20; 5-3 in 2018-19; 7-1 in 2017-18; 6-2 in 2016-17; 3-5 in 2015-16; 5-3 in 2014-15; 5-3 in 2013-14; and 6-2 in 2012-13.
•Through 10 seasons of conference play (through this season), the NSIC South holds a 352-266 advantage over NSIC North teams since divisions were formed in 2012-13. This season the NSIC South held a slight 33-31 advantage.
•The 2018-19 season is the only year in which the North has held an advantage versus the South.  

    SMSU PICKED 7TH IN NSIC PRESEASON POLL
•SMSU was picked to finish eighth overall and fifth in the South Division in the 16-team NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
•SMSU junior forward Jake Phipps was named a "Player to Watch".
•Wayne State was chosen as the South Division favorite, while Minnesota Duluth was selected as the North Division and overall preseason favorite.  

    NSIC FORMAT CONTINUES FOR SECOND YEAR  
•SMSU will play 22 conference games this season, including two versus each team within the NSIC South Division and one each versus the NSIC North Division.
•For the second straight season half of the NSIC doubleheaders will feature the men's game first followed by the women's game.
•Also again this season, the NSIC Sanford Tournament will feature 12 teams, with the top six in each division qualifying for the tournament. The top two teams in each division receive a spot in the quarterfinals.
•The quarterfinals, semifinals and championship game will all be played at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.

    CONSECUTIVE 3-POINT GAMES
•SMSU has made at least one 3-point field goal in 709 straight games.
•The last time SMSU failed to connect on a 3-pointer was on Dec. 11, 1998, versus MSU Moorhead (0 for 10) at the North Dakota State Classic.

    MUSTANGS AND THE CENTURY MARK
•SMSU last scored 100 points in a game on Feb. 1, 2019, versus Minnesota Crookston (100-78).
•SMSU is 40-8 all-time when scoring 100 points, including 8-2 under head coach Brad Bigler.

    WORKING OVERTIME
•SMSU has not played an overtime game this season after finishing 3-1 a season ago. SMSU's last overtime game was a  60-55 victory over Wayne State in Marshall on Feb. 17, 2022.
•SMSU is 51-40 all-time in overtime games.
•SMSU is 8-6 in double overtime and is 1-2 in triple overtime games all-time.

    SEASON OPENERS
•SMSU is 30-26 all-time in season openers having won nine of its last 17 and 17 of its last 26 season lid-lifters following this season's victory at Rogers State.
•SMSU has opened the season on the road seven times in the last eight seasons.

    SMSU IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
•SMSU has made five NCAA Tournament appearances (2001, 2009, 2012, 2017, 2018) since moving to Division II in 1995-96.
•SMSU is 9-5 all-time in NCAA Tournament games appearing in three region championship games with region titles and Elite Eight appearances in both 2001 and 2009.  

    SMSU ALL-TIME IN THE NSIC
•The 2022-23 campaign marks the 54th season SMSU has competed in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
•SMSU has an all-time record of 396-437 in 833 conference games, finishing in the top half of the final standings 26 times in 53 seasons.
•SMSU has captured one regular season championship (2000-01), two NSIC South Division titles (2016-17) and (2017-18) and two tournament championships (2012) and (2017).

    MUSTANG HISTORY
•SMSU is in its 56th season of men's basketball in 2022-23.
•SMSU has played 1,535 games compiling an all-time record of 710-825.
•SMSU has won two NSIC regular season championships (2001 & 2009), two NSIC South Division championships (2017 & 2018), two NSIC Tournament championships (2012, 2017), two NCAA Region championships (2001 & 2009) and has appeared in five NCAA Tournaments (2001, 2009, 2012, 2017, 2018).
•SMSU has recorded 25 winning seasons in program history with 18 coming in the last 25 years.
