Men's basketball closes regular season with division title aspirations; Senior Day set for Saturday

    THIS WEEK
•The Southwest Minnesota State University men's basketball team (15-10, 11-9 NSIC) closes the regular season this week with a road game on Thursday night and Saturday afternoon home game.
•SMSU will battle Augustana University (14-12, 10-10 NSIC) on Thursday night with tip-off slated for 5:30 p.m. at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D., while on Saturday the regular season will wrap-up with a home game versus Wayne State College (17-9, 12-8 NSIC) at the R/A Facility starting at 3:30 p.m.
•SMSU, which has gone 6-6 in 2023, is currently tied with Upper Iowa for third place in the NSIC South Division standings. Augustana is tied for fifth place, while Wayne State is tied for first place with Sioux Falls. The top six teams in the South and North division qualify for the 12-team NSIC Tournament with the top two seeds in each division earning a bye into the quarterfinals. The third and fourth seeds will host first round games on Feb. 22.  
•SMSU lost to Augustana earlier this season in Marshall, 64-60, and lost at Wayne State, 83-62. Box scores from both games this season can be found on pages 19-20.
•Saturday's game is 'Senior Day' as the SMSU program will honor Anthony Costello, Alex Hillesheim and Sam Schwartz.

•All games will be broadcast on 105.1 FM KARL with Ryan Rohlik providing play-by-play.

    SMSU HEAD COACH BRAD BIGLER
Brad Bigler, the all-time wins leader in program history, is in his 14th season as head coach and has an overall record of 220-175, including 149-138 in NSIC play.  
•The 2012-13 and 2016-17 NSIC Coach of the Year, Bigler has led SMSU to seven winning seasons, including one 28-win season, one 25-win season and two 19-win seasons.
•SMSU won NSIC Tournament titles in 2012 and 2017 and won back-to-back NSIC South Division championships in 2016-17 and 2017-18.  
•SMSU has played in five NSIC Tournament championship games during his tenure (2010, 2012, 2017, 2018, 2019).
•SMSU's 11th head coach, Bigler spent six seasons (2003-09) as an assistant coach at SMSU, including the last three as associate head coach.
•SMSU's 71 combined victories from 2016-19 was the best three-year stretch in program history.

    MUSTANGS BY THE NUMBERS
•SMSU leads the NSIC (league games only) in scoring defense (64.8), opponent field goal pct. (39.4) and 3-point field goal pct. defense (30.0).
Dunwa Omot ranks sixth in the NSIC (league games only) in free throw pct. (87.0) and 14th in scoring (16.1); Jake Phipps ranks second in field goal pct. (56.8), eighth in rebounding (7.0) and tied for second in blocked shots (1.4); Majok Majouk ranks tied for second in blocked shots (1.4); Cliff McCray is seventh in steals (1.6).
•For the season, SMSU has three players averaging double figures in scoring with sophomore Dunwa Omot leading the way at 16.3 ppg while connecting on a team-high 48 3-pointers and ranking second with 32 steals.
•Junior Jake Phipps is scoring 13.2 ppg, while shooting 57 percent from the field and leading the team in rebounding at 7.0 per game.
•Senior Anthony Costello is averaging 10.5 ppg and has made 29 3-pointers.
•Junior Cliff McCray is scoring 8.0 ppg and has dished out a team-leading 81 assists.
•SMSU is shooting 46 percent from the field, 36 percent from 3-point range, 76 percent from the free throw line and is plus-1.5 in rebound margin. The Mustangs are averaging 68 points per game, while opponents are averaging 64 ppg.

    PHIPPS REACHES 1,000 AND MORE...
•Junior Jake Phipps became the 26th member of the program's 1,000-point club in the Feb. 11 loss to Winona State and currently ranks 24th in team history with 1,014 points. He also ranks 21st in field goals made (416), third in blocked shots (111) and fifth in field goal pct. (56.6, 416 of 735). He is six blocked shots shy of tying Jeremy VanKlompenburg (2003-07) for second all-time at 117. Current SMSU assistant coach, Nick Smith, holds the program record of 174.  

    MUSTANG TIP-OFF TIDBITS
•SMSU's nine home victories is the program's highest since winning 12 in 2018-19.
•Junior Cliff McCray ranks eighth in team history in assists (272) and 10th in steals (122).
•Senior Anthony Costello reached an individual milestone at Bemidji State on Jan. 27, scoring his 1,000th career point. He scored 551 points in 52 games at Dakota State (2018-20) and has scored 490 points in 52 games at SMSU (2021-23). He has scored 1,041 career points in 104 career games.
•SMSU is limiting opponents to 39.3 percent shooting from the field and 29.6 percent from 3-point range this season with both currently ranking first in team single-season history. SMSU is allowing 63.8 points per game ranking as the third-lowest in team history. The 2006-07 team holds the single-season record at 61.4 ppg, while the 2008-09 team held teams to 62.2 ppg.
•Redshirt freshman Majok Majouk set a program single-game record for 3-point field goal pct. (min. 6 made) in the win at Minnesota State on Feb. 3 making 6 of 6. Jordan Miller held the previous record making 8 of 9 in 2009.
•In the Division II national statistics (Feb. 13), SMSU ranks fifth in field goal pct. defense (39.3), 11th in 3-point field goal pct. defense (29.6), 18th in scoring defense (63.8), 19th in fouls per game (13.8) and 40th in free throw pct. (76.2). Sophomore Dunwa Omot ranks 46th in free throw pct. (86.7), while Jake Phipps is 43rd with 34 blocked shots and is 45th in field goal pct. (56.5).
•Omot ranks first in team history in free throw pct. (87.0, 114 of 131) and is second in 3-point field goal pct. (46.5, 105 of 226). He recently became the 19th player in program history to connect on 100 3-pointers. Omot's 56.6 3-point field goal pct. (56 of 99) last season set a program single-season record, while his 87.5 free throw pct. ranks seventh in team single-season history.

    MUSTANGS SPLITS ANOTHER WEEKEND
•SMSU split two home games last weekend, defeating Upper Iowa, 69-60, before seeing a 14-point second half lead disappear in a 72-68 overtime loss to Winona State.
Jake Phipps scored a career-high 28 points on 12 of 17 shooting, while also grabbing a team-high eight rebounds in the victory over UIU.
Cliff McCray and Dunwa Omot also scored double figures for SMSU with 11 point each, while Jakob Braaten added five points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
•In the loss to WSU, which SMSU had a chance to win with a field goal near the end of regulation, Omot scored 19 points with three 3-pointers, while Phipps added 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Anthony Costello also scored in double figures for the Mustangs with 13 points.

    SERIES HISTORY VERSUS AUGUSTANA
•SMSU and Augustana meet for the 45th time on Thursday with AU leading 29-15 with the first meeting in 1972-73.
•AU has won the past nine games with SMSU's last victory coming on Feb. 24, 2018, in Sioux Falls, S.D.
•SMSU head coach Brad Bigler is 8-19 all-time versus Augustana.

    SERIES HISTORY VERSUS WAYNE STATE
•SMSU and WSC meet for the 80th time on Saturday with WSC leading 43-36 in a series that started in 1969-70.
•SMSU leads the series 24-16 in games played in Marshall, including earning a 60-55 overtime win last season.
•WSC has won four of the last five games, but SMSU has won 18 of the last 25 games since Dec. 3, 2011.
•SMSU head coach Brad Bigler is 20-9 all-time versus WSC.

    SCOUTING AUGUSTANA
•The Vikings are 14-12 overall, 10-10 NSIC, and have won three straight and five of their last six. AU defeated Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State at home last weekend.  
•Senior guard Isaac Fink is scoring 13.4 ppg and leads the team with 7.7 rpg.
•Senior guard Ryan Miller is averaging 13.3 points with 38 3-pointers.
•Junior guard Jadan Graves is averaging 12.4 ppg and has made a team-high 52 3-pointers.
•AU is shooting 44 percent from the field, 37 percent from 3-point range, 76 percent from the free throw line and is plus-3.2 in rebound margin.
•AU is averaging 73 points per game, while opponents are averaging 70 points per game.
•Head coach Tom Billeter is in his 20th season with a record of 366-204. He led the Vikings to the 2016 NCAA Championship. He has a career record of 460-252 in 24 seasons overall having spent four seasons as head coach at North Dakota State.
 
    SCOUTING WAYNE STATE
•The Wildcats begin the week at 17-9 overall, 12-8 NSIC, and host Sioux Falls Thursday night.
•The Wildcats are 3-3 in their last six games and 6-6 in their last 12 games.
•Senior forward Jordan Janssen, this week's NSIC South Player of the Week and the program's all-time leader in rebounding, is averaging a team-high 20.8 points and a team-high 8.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 54 percent.
•Senior guard Nate Mohr, who has scored more than 1,000  career points, is averaging 14.5 ppg with 74 3-pointers.
•WSC is shooting 45 percent from the field, 37 percent from 3-point range, 80 percent from the free throw line and is plus-1.7 in rebound margin.
•WSC is averaging 76 points per game, while opponents are averaging 71 points per game.
•Head coach Jeff Kaminsky is in his seventh season at WSC with a record of 97-96. He has also been head coach at Valley City State and Wisconsin-Superior recording more than 538 victories in his career.

    MUSTANG CAREER 20-POINT GAMES  
•Four SMSU players, senior Anthony Costello,  junior Jake Phipps, sophomore Dunwa Omot and redshirt freshman Majok Majouk have scored 20 or more points in a game during their careers.
•Omot has reached the mark seven times this season and eight times in his career, Phipps has reached 20 points four times this season and 10 times in his career, Costello has two 20-point games this season, while Majouk has one this season.

    OMOT NAMED NSIC SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK
•SMSU sophomore guard Dunwa Omot was named the NSIC South Division Player of the Week on Jan. 23. He averaged 27.5 points and 7.0 rebounds, while shooting 54.8 percent (17 of 31) from the field, including 7 of 14 from 3-point range to help SMSU earn victories over St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth.

    JAKOB BRAATEN NOTES
•Has played in 22 games with 14 starts and is averaging 5.7 ppg and 3.6 rpg. Missed three games with an injury.
•Scored season-high 11 points with five field goals at Wayne State (12/3/22) and also scored 11 points at Winona State (12/9/22).
•Pulled down career-high eight rebounds vs. Mt. Marty (11/26/22).

    NSIC SOUTH VS. NSIC NORTH
•SMSU is a combined 47-31 versus North Division teams in conference play since divisions were introduced prior to the 2012-13 season, including finishing 4-4 this season.
•SMSU finished with 3-3 mark versus NSIC North Division teams in 2021-22. SMSU was 3-5 versus the NSIC North in 2019-20; 5-3 in 2018-19; 7-1 in 2017-18; 6-2 in 2016-17; 3-5 in 2015-16; 5-3 in 2014-15; 5-3 in 2013-14; and 6-2 in 2012-13.
•Through 10 seasons of conference play (through this season), the NSIC South holds a 352-266 advantage over NSIC North teams since divisions were formed in 2012-13. This season the NSIC South held a slight 33-31 advantage.
•The 2018-19 season is the only year in which the North has held an advantage versus the South.  

    SMSU PICKED 5TH/8TH IN NSIC PRESEASON POLL
•SMSU was picked to finish fifth in the South Division and eighth overall and in the 16-team NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
•SMSU junior forward Jake Phipps was named a "Player to Watch".
•Wayne State was chosen as the South Division favorite, while Minnesota Duluth was selected as the North Division and overall preseason favorite.

    CONSECUTIVE 3-POINT GAMES
•SMSU has made at least one 3-point field goal in 713 straight games.
•The last time SMSU failed to connect on a 3-pointer was on Dec. 11, 1998, versus MSU Moorhead (0 for 10) at the North Dakota State Classic.

    MUSTANGS AND THE CENTURY MARK
•SMSU last scored 100 points in a game on Feb. 1, 2019, versus Minnesota Crookston (100-78).
•SMSU is 40-8 all-time when scoring 100 points, including 8-2 under head coach Brad Bigler.

    WORKING OVERTIME
•SMSU is 0-1 in overtime games this season following a 72-68 home loss to Winona State on Feb. 11.
•SMSU finished 3-1 in overtime games last season.
•SMSU is 51-41 all-time in overtime games.
•SMSU is 8-6 in double overtime and is 1-2 in triple overtime games all-time.

    SEASON OPENERS
•SMSU is 30-26 all-time in season openers having won nine of its last 17 and 17 of its last 26 season lid-lifters following this season's victory at Rogers State.
•SMSU has opened the season on the road seven times in the last eight seasons.

    SMSU IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
•SMSU has made five NCAA Tournament appearances (2001, 2009, 2012, 2017, 2018) since moving to Division II in 1995-96.
•SMSU is 9-5 all-time in NCAA Tournament games appearing in three region championship games with region titles and Elite Eight appearances in both 2001 and 2009.  

    SMSU ALL-TIME IN THE NSIC

•SMSU has an all-time record of 398-439 in 837 conference games, finishing in the top half of the final standings 26 times in 53 seasons.
•SMSU has captured one regular season championship (2000-01), two NSIC South Division titles (2016-17) and (2017-18) and two tournament championships (2012) and (2017).

•SMSU has played 1,539 games compiling an all-time record of 712-827.
•SMSU has won two NSIC regular season championships (2001 & 2009), two NSIC South Division championships (2017 & 2018), two NSIC Tournament championships (2012, 2017), two NCAA Region championships (2001 & 2009) and has appeared in five NCAA Tournaments (2001, 2009, 2012, 2017, 2018).
•SMSU has recorded 25 winning seasons in program history with 18 coming in the last 25 years.
