THIS WEEK
•The Southwest Minnesota State University men's basketball team (14-9, 10-8 NSIC), following four straight road games, returns home for a pair of games this Friday and Saturday inside the R/A Facility.
•SMSU will battle Upper Iowa University (13-11, 10-8 NSIC) on Friday night with tip-off slated for 5:30 p.m., while on Saturday will host Winona State University (13-10, 8-10 NSIC) for the annual 'Tropical Night' game with tip-off slated for 3:30 p.m.
•SMSU, which split a pair of road games last weekend, is currently tied with UIU for third place in the NSIC South Division standings, while WSU is tied for sixth place. The top six teams in the South and North division qualify for the 12-team NSIC Tournament with the top two seeds in each division earning a bye into the quarterfinals. The third and fourth seeds will host first round games on Feb. 22.
•SMSU lost to UIU earlier this season in Fayette, 66-57, but beat WSU in Winona, 62-46. Box scores from both games this season can be found on pages 19-20.

SMSU HEAD COACH BRAD BIGLER
•
Brad Bigler, the all-time wins leader in program history, is in his 14th season as head coach and has an overall record of 219-174, including 148-137 in NSIC play.
•The 2012-13 and 2016-17 NSIC Coach of the Year, Bigler has led SMSU to seven winning seasons, including one 28-win season, one 25-win season and two 19-win seasons.
•SMSU won NSIC Tournament titles in 2012 and 2017 and won back-to-back NSIC South Division championships in 2016-17 and 2017-18.
•SMSU has played in five NSIC Tournament championship games during his tenure (2010, 2012, 2017, 2018, 2019).
•SMSU's 11th head coach, Bigler spent six seasons (2003-09) as an assistant coach at SMSU, including the last three as associate head coach.

Jake Phipps is two field goals away from 400 made in his career and becoming the 23rd player in team history to reach the milestone. Phipps also ranks fifth in team history in field goal pct. (56.4, 398 of 707) and is third in blocked shots (107). He is 10 blocked shots shy of tying Jeremy VanKlompenburg (2003-07) for second all-time at 117. Current SMSU assistant coach,

Cliff McCray has moved into the top 10 in team history in both assists (268) and steals (121), ranking 10th in both categories.
•Senior
Anthony Costello reached an individual milestone at Bemidji State on Jan. 27, scoring his 1,000th career point. He scored 551 points in 52 games at Dakota State (2018-20) and has scored 472 points in 50 games at SMSU (2021-23). He has scored 1,023 career points in 102 career games.
•SMSU is limiting opponents to 39.6 percent shooting from the field and 29.8 percent from 3-point range this season with both currently ranking first in team single-season history. SMSU is allowing 63.7 points per game ranking as the third-lowest in team history. The 2006-07 team holds the single-season record at 61.4 ppg, while the 2008-09 team held teams to 62.2 ppg.
•In the Division II national statistics (Feb. 7), SMSU ranks ninth in field goal pct. defense (39.6), 14th in 3-point field goal pct. defense (29.8), 16th in fouls per game (13.7), 17th in scoring defense (63.7) and 18th in free throw pct. (77.6). Sophomore
Dunwa Omot ranks 48th in free throw pct. (86.1), while Phipps is 54th with 30 blocked shots.
•Omot ranks first in team history in free throw pct. (86.6, 110 of 127) and is second in 3-point field goal pct. (46.5, 99 of 213). His next 3-pointer made will make him the 19th player in program history to connect on 100 3-pointers. Omot's 56.6 3-point field goal pct. (56 of 99) last season set a program single-season record, while his 87.5 free throw pct. ranks seventh in team single-season history.

MUSTANGS SPLIT TWO ROAD GAMES
•SMSU finished a four-game road trip last weekend earning a 73-67 victory over Minnesota State, before losing in the final minute to Concordia-St. Paul, 63-60.

NSIC SOUTH VS. NSIC NORTH
•SMSU is a combined 47-31 versus North Division teams in conference play since divisions were introduced prior to the 2012-13 season, including finishing 4-4 this season.
