WINONA, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's tennis team earned its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory of the season on Saturday night with a 5-2 win over Upper Iowa University inside the Winona Tennis Center.
SMSU (2-10, 1-2 NSIC) secured the doubles points with the Mustangs taking all three matches.
Courtenay Leonard and
Gabriela Almeida earned a 6-4 victory at No. 1,
Joana Reis Indio and
Maura Wiens won 6-4 at No. 2, while
Roz Oye and
Faith Madikwe cruised to a 6-0 win at No. 3.
SMSU lost matches at both No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but Madikwe would earn a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 with Almeida picking up a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4.
Camila Paccieri also won at No. 5 by a score of 6-1, 6-1, while Wiens earned his first career singles victory with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 6.
UIU falls to 0-4 overall and 0-4 NSIC.
SMSU continues league action on Sunday with a 1:30 p.m. match versus Winona State.
