ST. PETER, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State tennis team earned another Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory on Saturday afternoon defeating MSU Moorhead, 6-1, inside the Swanson Tennis Center.
SMSU, which has won two of its last three matches, won two of three doubles matches to earn the team point and then captured five of six hard-fought singles matches.
The Mustangs'
Courtenay Leonard and
Gabriela Almeida cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, while SMSU's No. 3 team of
Roz Oye and
Faith Madikwe earned a 6-4 victory to give SMSU a 1-0 advantage.
Madikwe and
Maura Wiens both earned three-set victories in singles play for the Mustangs. Madikwe won 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 at No. 4, with Wiens securing a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 6.
Joana Reis Indio earned a straight-set 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 2 with teammate
Camila Paccieri also winning in straight sets at No. 5 by scores of 7-5, 6-1. Almeida finished her day with a 2-0 mark by winning 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3.
SMSU will have a quick turnaround and be back on the court on Sunday with a 7 a.m. match versus UMary at the Swanson Tennis Center.
