Mustangs set school and meet records during big day in Iowa

DECORAH, Iowa – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's and men's track & field teams put together an impressive Saturday afternoon competing at the Luther Norse Invitational setting a pair of meet records and winning numerous events.
 
Shealyn Tom set a women's meet and school record with a first place mark of 3.50m in the pole vault.
 
Max Schmitt ran 55.04 in the 400 meter hurdles to capture first place and set a men's meet record.
 
Sierra Clifford earned two first-place finishes for the women's team crossing the line at 57.87 in the 400-meters and 25.81 in the 200 meters.
 
Macie Langstraat also registered a first-place finish in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:55.20.
 
Nadia Sanford earned another first place finish for the Mustangs in the shot put at 12.97m with Emily Lorentz placing second at 12.09m and Kate Battaforyen earning third at 11.75m.
 
Battaforyen and Sanford finished second and third respectively in the discus with marks of 40.38m and 38.20m. Sanford also finished fifth in the hammer throw at 40.87m with Morgan Hughes in sixth place at 40.45m.
 
Rainbow Stands finished with a height of 1.59m to finish second in the high jump.
 
Hannah Koepfinger picked-up a second place finish in the 100 meter hurdles at 15.83.
 
Kyra Kusnierek ran 2:22.66 in the 800 meters to finish fourth overall.
 
On the men's side, Tyler Smith ran 49.24 to capture first place in the 400 meters and was third in the 200 meters at 22.56.
 
Carl Swedzinski finished in second place in the hammer throw with a mark of 49.36m, while Tyler Nebelung also was second in the shot put at 14.57m.
 
Deekon Anvid went 45.92m in the discus to finish third with Nebelung coming in fourth place at 44.75m.
 
Noah Eckelberg competed in the 400 meter wheelchair race and finished at 54.29 and went 16.05 in the 100 meters.

SMSU will next compete on Friday and Saturday, April 21-22, at the Red Raider Open in Orange City, Iowa.
