BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's tennis team won a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matches on Friday and Saturday at the Gillett Wellness Center to secure a spot in next week's eight-team NSIC Tournament in Sioux Falls, S.D.
SMSU earned a spot in the tournament by defeating Minnesota Crookston, 5-2, on Friday night, before cruising to a 7-0 win on Saturday over Bemidji State.
SMSU, 6-14 overall, 5-6 NSIC, will learn its seed and opponent for the tournament on Sunday. The quarterfinals begin on Friday, April 21, at Huether Family Match Pointe.
In Friday's win over UMC,
Gabriela Almeida at No. 2,
Joana Reis Indio at No. 3,
Faith Madikwe at No. 4 and
Camila Paccieri at No. 6, all won in straight sets in singles play for the Mustangs.
SMSU's No. 1 doubles team of
Courtenay Leonard and Almeida won 7-6, while
Maura Wiens and Reis Indio won at No. 3 to earn the team point.
In the victory over BSU on Saturday, the Mustangs won in straight sets in all six singles matches and also secured the doubles point with three wins.
