ROGERS, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State women's tennis team suffered a hard-fought 4-3 loss to St. Cloud State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Saturday at the Rogers Tennis Center.
SCSU is now 9-4 overall, 5-3 NSIC, while SMSU drops to 4-13 overall, 3-5 NSIC.
SCSU picked-up the doubles point winning two of three matches. SMSU's No. 3 team of
Camila Paccieri and Joana Reis Indo earned the lone victory by a 7-5 score.
Courtenay Leonard and
Gabriela Almeida lost a tight 7-5 match at No. 1, while
Maura Wiens and
Faith Madikwe lost at No. 2 by a score of 6-2.
In singles play, Leonard cruised at No. 1 winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, while Reis Indio also earned a straight set, 7-6, 7-5 win at No. 3. SMSU's other victory came at No. 2 with Almeida earning a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory.
SCSU secured the overall match victory winning in straight sets at No. 4, 5 and 6.
The Mustangs, which have three matches remaining in the regular season, return to the court next Saturday, April 8, with a 9 a.m. match versus Minnesota State in Owatonna, Minn.
