OWATONNA, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's tennis team suffered a 6-1 loss to Minnesota State on Saturday morning at the Owatonna West Tennis Center.
 
MSU, which is second in the NSIC standings, improves to 10-1 overall, 7-1 NSIC. SMSU, which is tied for eighth in the league standings, drops to 3-6 in NSIC play and 4-14 overall.
 
SMSU earned its lone team point in singles play as 
Maura Wiens earned a 7-6, 1-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory at No. 6.
 
The Mustangs lost the other five singles matches in straight sets. The Mavericks won all three doubles matches to earn the team point. 
Courtenay Leonard and 
Gabriela Almeida lost 6-4 at No. 1, while 
Camila Paccieri and 
Joana Reis Indio suffered a hard-fought 7-6 loss at No. 3.
 
SMSU will close the regular season with two big matches next Friday and Saturday in Virginia, Minn. The Mustangs take on ninth-place Minnesota Crookston on Friday at 5 p.m., before facing 10
th-place Bemidji State on Saturday at 11 a.m. The top eight teams qualify for the NSIC tournament on April 21-23 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
