Ninth inning rally lifts SMSU to sweep over Northern State

WEBSTER, S.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State University baseball team scored seven runs in the ninth inning to stun Northern State University and earn an 8-2 victory in game two and complete at doubleheader sweep on a windy Sunday at Bob Wiley Field. SMSU rallied from a 3-0 deficit in game one, scoring seven runs in the fifth inning to defeat the Wolves, 9-5.

The three-game set, originally scheduled to be played in Aberdeen, was moved due to field conditions. The two teams will complete the series on Monday with a single game at 12 p.m.

SMSU, which is in fifth place in the NSIC standings, improves to 24-12 overall, 16-10 NSIC. The Mustangs have now won five straight weekend series and will go for their fifth straight three-game weekend sweep on Monday.

In the night cap, SMSU threated to score several times in the first seven innings but failed to capitalize and trialed 2-0 heading into the eighth. Owen Latendresse and Max Kalenberg walked to open the eighth, but after a failed sac bunt attempt and a strikeout, things looked bleak once again for the Mustangs, but a two-out fielding error on a ball hit by Jake Tauer scored Kalenberg. SMSU would later load the bases, but a strikeout kept NSU in the lead at 2-1 after eight.

In the ninth, Jaxon Haase walked to start the game-winning rally and moved to second on Chase McDaniel's third hit of the game. Following a fly out, Kalenberg hit a comebacker to the mound, but the throw was high to load the bases. Peyton Nash followed with a deep fly ball to right that was dropped by the right fielder to score pinch-runner Matt Seykora and tie the game. Keenan Wenzel gave SMSU the lead coaxing a bases loaded walk before Tauer grounded out to second to plate another run and extend the lead to 4-2. Another fielding error on a ball batted by Brady Petron scored another run before Isaac Nett capped the inning crushing a three-run home run to right-center field and push the lead to 8-2.

Brady Brosz (2-1), the third pitcher used by SMSU in the game, retired all four batters he faced to earn the win. Kobe Lovell was solid in relief, tossing 2 2/3 shutout innings with four strikeouts while allowing three hits and two walks.

Ansen Dulas started for SMSU and pitched the first five innings, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks.

SMSU was limited to six hits in game two with McDaniel finishing 3 for 6, while Nett, Seykora and Wenzel had the other base hitS. SMSU batters walked 11 times with Kalenberg working four walks to tie a school single-game record. Robbie Smith walked four times earlier this season, while Gary Schleper also walked four times during the 1984 season.

In game one, trailing 3-0 in the fifth, Caleb Gardow started the rally with a double and was followed by a walk to Nett and an infield single by Haase to load the bases. A wild pitch scored the first run before McDaniel was walked to reload the bases. Latendress hit a run-scoring single to cut the deficit to 3-2, before Kalenberg drilled a three-run double to put the Mustangs in front 5-3.

SMSU wasn't done in the frame, as Nash singled to put runners at the corners with no outs before Wenzel added an RBI sac bunt to score another run. Moments later, Tauer dropped a bunt single to plate another and pushed the lead to 7-3.

The lead moved to 9-3 in the sixth as Latendresse drilled a solo home run into a stiff wind over the center field fence, while Wenzel later added an RBI single.

NSU (10-27, 5-21 NSIC) scored two in the bottom of the sixth off SMSU starter Ryan Chmielewski, but the lefty stranded two runners on base with a ground out to end further damage. Mitchell Bouwman closed out the victory by tossing a scoreless seventh inning.

Chmielewski (4-1) allowed five runs (four earned) off 10 hits in six innings with five strikeouts, one walk and one hit by pitch.

The Mustang offense had 12 hits in the opener with Tauer, Gardow, Haase and Latendresse each finishing with two hits. Nash and Latendresse both scored two runs, while Nett walked three times.
