MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State University head football coach
Scott Underwood recently announced the program will be honoring the 1999 SMSU football team this season during homecoming weekend on Oct. 13-14.
The 1999 team will be honored and recognized on the field during halftime of the Oct. 14 game versus Northern State which will begin at 4 p.m.
Team members are invited back to campus on Friday, Oct. 13, to attend practice, followed by a 1999 team social that evening at a site to be announced. Saturday's festivities include a pregame tour of The Schwan Regional Event Center, pregame tailgate and post-game gathering.
The 1999 squad, under the direction of head coach Ron Flowers, finished 6-5 overall, recording the program's first-ever winning record at the NCAA level. The Mustang defense was outstanding all season long, leading the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in total defense, rush defense and scoring defense. One major highlight during the season was a 14-9 victory at Minnesota Duluth, which still marks the only road win for SMSU in Duluth in team history. The team reeled off four straight victories late in the season before suffering a season-finale loss at FCS member Northern Iowa.
SMSU seniors Russ Barclay, Jason Jacobs and Nate Rudolph were all named All-NSIC first team, while senior Ryan Sims and junior Steve Swain were both named All-NSIC second team. Seniors Corey Walker and Nate Lindeman, along with junior Corey Johnson and freshman Josh Schleusner were all named All-NSIC honorable mention.
