Wall reaches 1,000 career points as SMSU extends win streak to eight

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team pushed its win streak to eight in a row—its longest since the 2001-02 season—earning a 74-61 victory over MSU Moorhead in NSIC basketball on Friday night at Nemzek Fieldhouse.

SMSU's Sam Wall scored a season-high 25 points and in the second quarter became the 24th player in team history to reach 1,000 career points. She made a career-high nine field goals on 15 attempts and finished the game tying a career-high with six 3-pointers. She became just the second Mustang player in team history to reach 200 career 3-pointers moving past former teammate, Sadie Stelter, who made 199. Jenna Borchers is the program's all-time leader with 251 in 126 games.

SMSU improves to 10-6 overall, 8-2 NSIC, and has defeated MSUM four straight times, but earns its first in Moorhead since Jan. 3, 2012. MSUM had its three-game winning streak snapped and falls to 5-9 overall, 5-4 NSIC.

Bri Stoltzman helped the SMSU cause with 19 points on 7 of 16 shooting, while recording six rebounds, a career-high six steals and four assists. Hannah Parsley recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds, while Madison Gehloff chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Mustangs finished the game shooting 42 percent (27 of 64) from the field, while making 12 of 30 from 3-point range. The Dragons shot 37 percent (23 of 63) from the field and connected on five 3-pointers.

SMSU held an 11-7 advantage with under three minutes left in the first quarter before Stoltzman hit a 3-pointer and a layup, while Blandin closed the frame with a 3-pointer to push the Mustang margin to 19-9.

SMSU maintained the lead midway through the second quarter before Wall took over and expanded the Mustang advantage to key a 15-3 run. She hit a turnaround jumper and moments later drilled a 3-pointer to make the score 32-16. Following a field goal by MSUM, Wall connected on another 3-pointer, which put her over the 1,000-point milestone and pushed the SMSU lead to 35-18. Wall would later hit another 3-pointer, her fourth of the half, to make the score 42-19. MSUM would close the half with five straight points to cut the deficit to 42-24 at the break.

SMSU maintained the double-digit lead for the rest of the game, but MSUM did cut the deficit to 58-41 late in the third quarter, but a Wall 3-pointer and layups by Parsley and Gehloff to close the third quarter gave SMSU a 65-43 lead.
