Mustangs continue hot streak with huge win over Minot State

MINOT, N.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team added another mark to the win column and extended its winning streak further with a dominant 80-42 win over Minot State in NSIC women's college basketball on Saturday evening.

SMSU, which won its ninth game in a row for the first time since the 2001-02 season, moves to 11-6 overall and 9-2 in NSIC play. MSU drops to 5-14 overall, 3-8 in the conference.

Sam Wall scored a game-high 20 points with six 3-pointers. It marks back-to-back 20-point games for the senior as she added two rebounds and two assists in the win. Madison Gehloff tallied 16 points on 6 of 11 shooting with six rebounds and three assists. Peyton Blandin and Audrey Swanson went a combined 8 of 12 from the field in adding 22 points for the Mustangs.

MSU scored 10 of 18 points to start the game and led 10-8 with just under six minutes remaining in the first quarter. SMSU countered the run with an explosion from beyond the arc, shooting 60 percent (6 of 10) in the opening quarter in building a 20-14 advantage after the first 10 minutes.

The Beavers were led by Maya Aguilar with seven points on 3 of 4 shooting.

The Mustangs hit the gas right away in the second quarter, using a 13-2 run fueled by two Peyton Blandin 3-pointers to increase the lead to 17 points with two minutes left in the half. Minot State scored twice more to cut the lead to 36-21 at the half.

SMSU continued its red-hot shooting in the second half, going on another 13-2 run backed by Gehloff jumpers to take a 26-point lead. The Beavers showed life in the closing minutes of the third frame by forcing their way to the free-throw line. SMSU led MSU 54-35 entering the final 10 minutes of play.

The Mustangs outscored the Beavers 29-6 in the last quarter. SMSU held the 36-20 rebounding advantage as well.

UP NEXT

SMSU continues play versus NSIC foes next weekend on the road against Minnesota Crookston on Friday, Jan. 20, before returning to the R/A Facility for games against UMary and Northern State.
