SMSU wins 10th straight, rolls over UMC 99-62

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team defeated Minnesota Crookston in NSIC women's college basketball on Saturday afternoon 99-62, the most points in an NSIC game for the Mustangs since the 2000-01 season.

SMSU, on its longest winning streak in over 20 years, moves to 12-6 overall and 10-2 in NSIC play. UMC drops to 9-9 overall, 6-6 in the conference.

For the first time this season, five Mustangs scored in double-figures with Madison Gehloff leading the way with 18 points on 7 of 8 shooting with five rebounds. Sam Wall added 17 points on 7 of 16 shooting with three makes from deep, while Hannah Parsley posted a season-high 17 points on 7 of 9 shooting with a team-high two blocks, two steals, and five rebounds. 

Peyton Blandin and Bri Stoltzman went a combined 8 of 16 from the field in adding 23 points for the Mustangs. Blandin knocked down a team-high four 3-pointers while Stoltzman dished a team-high seven assists.

The Mustangs shot 54 percent (37 of 69) from the field including 11 makes from deep, the fifth time SMSU has shot at least 50 percent in a game this season. UMC closed the night making 37 percent (22 of 59) of its shots with just five 3-pointers.

SMSU made 5 of 6 field goals to start the game and led 14-2 with just under seven minutes remaining in the first quarter. After a UMC layup from Jamie Tormanen, the Mustangs pursued another run for the following two minutes scoring 11 of the next 13 points. SMSU forced nine turnovers in the first quarter which resulted in 15 points off turnovers for the Mustangs.

Emma Miller led the Golden Eagles with 21 points on 6 of 19 shooting with five rebounds and three assists.

UMC and SMSU traded points for the first five minutes of the second quarter leading into the media timeout. Following the media timeout, SMSU closed the first half on a 10-7 run backed by Kennadi Buchholz and Sam Wall.

SMSU shot 67 percent in the opening half (20 of 30) including four 3-pointers en route to building a 23-point lead at the half at a score of 54-31.

SMSU opened the second half on another 12-6 run backed by scores from Blandin and Elizabeth Wagner. UMC held SMSU scoreless in the next two minutes while scoring twice to cut the lead to 66-39. Gehloff drilled a three before Brynn Busse snatched a steal and brought in coast-to-coast for bucket the following possession to extend the lead back to 71-39 with just over three minutes remaining in the third quarter.

UMC made a layup and a free throw following the back-to-back Mustang buckets before SMSU closed the quarter on a 7-3 run aided by Bri Stoltzman.

The Mustangs outscored the Golden Eagles 21-17 in the last quarter. SMSU held the 42-33 rebounding advantage as well.
