MARSHALL, Minn. – Lexie Schneider totaled a career-high 37 points to power UMary to victory over the SMSU women's basketball team by a score of 83-72 in NSIC women's college basketball on Friday night inside the R/A Facility.
SMSU, which had its longest winning streak in over 20 years snapped, drops to 12-7 on the season and 10-3 in NSIC play. UMary moves to 13-8 overall, 9-4 NSIC.
The Mustangs closed the game shooting 41 percent (26 of 63) from the field including six makes from deep. UMary shot 53 percent (29 of 55) from the field with four makes from beyond the arc.
Hannah Parsley tied a career-high 19 points on 6 of 9 shooting, while pulling down five rebounds and snatching four steals.
Peyton Blandin aided Parsley with 13 points on 5 of 13 shooting with five rebounds and two assists, while
Madison Gehloff added 12 points, four rebounds, and one steal.
Sam Wall got the Mustangs started with a right elbow jumper to kick off a 6-2 to begin the game. The Marauders forced the Mustangs to 2 of 7 shooting in the next four minutes building an 8-4 run to tie the game at 10-10 with minutes left in the first quarter. Mariah McKeever scored five points in the final two minutes to power UMary to a 17-14 advantage after one-quarter of play.
UMary kicked off the second quarter with an 11-7 run backed by scores from Schneider and Moriku Hakim to settle the score at 28-21 with four minutes left in the half. The tides turned in favor of the Mustangs as they began an 11-5 run backed by a pair of Parsley layups before a
Maddie Thorfinnson 3-pointer gave the Mustangs the lead with 1:44 remaining in the half. The teams would trade scores in the dwindling minutes of the half, eventually pushing it to 33-32 in favor of UMary going into the next 20 minutes.
Both teams scored buckets in quick succession to open the final 20 minutes.
Bri Stoltzman snatched a steal on the defensive end and brought it coast-to-coast to bring the score to 37-36 with 8:37 remaining in the third quarter. Shortly after, Ashton Kinnebrew converted a 4-point play for the Marauders to extend the lead to 41-36.
A fast Gehloff layup gave SMSU the momentum advantage to start the fourth quarter. The Marauders gained back the momentum with ease, gathering 11 of their previous 14 points at the free-throw line. However, the Marauders would not go away, using Lexie Schneider as the backbone of the offense to propel themselves to victory.
The Mustangs host Northern State tomorrow for Tropical Night inside the R/A Facility, with tip-off scheduled for 5 p.m.
