SMSU drops game to Minot State

MINOT, N.D. – Khari Broadway put up a big game to will Minot State to a confident 72-60 victory over SMSU on Saturday night in NSIC men's college basketball inside the Minot State Dome.
 
SMSU, which led by four points in the game with just minutes remaining, fell short again on Saturday to drop to 9-8 overall, 6-5 NSIC, while MSU jumps to 13-3 overall, 8-2 NSIC.
 
Dunwa Omot led the Mustangs with 15 points on 5 of 10 shooting and two steals. Aeron Stevens was the only other Mustang to score double-figure points with 11, while pulling down a team-high six rebounds and three assists.

SMSU closed the night shooting 36 percent (20 of 55) from the field, and made just 8 of 22 from 3-point range. 
 
MSU finished the game shooting 47 percent (27 of 59), while making 8 of 26 from 3-point range. The Beavers held a 36-27 rebound advantage 
 
Khari Broadway led a balanced MSU attack with 20 points on 7 of 11 shooting and went a perfect 5 of 5 from the free throw line.
 
The Mustangs opened the game strong using a pair of Omot jump shots to take the early lead at 15-7 with 13 minutes and 12 seconds remaining in the opening half.
 
Khari Broadway would knock down a pair of free throws to spark an 13-3 run by the Beavers capped off by a Dylan Gichaba jumper to claim the lead at 23-15 at the 5:09 mark.
 
Jake Phipps and Aeron Stevens would score back-to-back layups to stop the bleeding, but the Beavers would not go away in scoring eight of the final 14 points in the half to enter the final 20 minutes with a 31-21 lead.

SMSU would bounce back in the early minutes of the second half using a 13-4 run that lasted just over four minutes to cut the deficit to one point with 15 minutes remaining. Mekhi Shaw would spark another run shortly after to push the Mustangs in front at 49-45 with seven and a half minutes left in the game. 

The lead would not last long for the Mustangs, as Khari Broadway got a layup to go to create a massive 19-6 run for the Beavers capped off by Broadway hitting a jumper. The Beavers shot 10 of 11 from the field in the final seven minutes of the game. MSU led 64-55 with just over two minutes remaining, forcing SMSU to foul for the remaining seconds.
  
MSU shot 52 percent in the second half with four 3-pointers, while SMSU was limited to 38 percent shooting.
  
SMSU continues play versus NSIC foes next weekend on the road against Minnesota Crookston on Friday, Jan. 20, before returning to the R/A Facility for games against UMary and Northern State.
