SMSU opens new year with win over Martin Luther

MARSHALL, Minn.--The Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team opened the new year on Tuesday night with a 91-35 victory over Martin Luther College inside the R/A Facility. The game was highlighted by career-high scoring performances for multiple Mustangs.
 
SMSU, 7-6 overall, had four players score in double figures with Audrey Swanson and Bri Stoltzman leading the way with 16 points apiece. Swanson's 16 points grant a career-high for the sophomore as she added five rebounds and four assists in the win. Stoltzman went 6 of 9 from the field while also capturing five rebounds and four assists. Elizabeth Wagner also had a career night, posting 13 points while blocking four shots and grabbing six rebounds. Sam Wall scored 11 points on 4 of 5 shooting with three 3-pointers on three attempts.
 
The Mustangs finished the game shooting 55 percent (34 of 62) from the field including a season-high 56 percent from deep (14 of 25).
 
Martin Luther (3-9), a Division III school, was led by Emma Nelson's 12 points with five rebounds and two blocks. Tonight's game was an exhibition game for the Knights. MLC closed the night shooting 26 percent (13 of 50) from the field with no makes from deep.
 
SMSU scored 11 of 13 points to start the game and never looked back in building a 38-4 advantage after one quarter of play. The Mustangs would shoot 60 percent in the second quarter while limiting the Knights to just 5 of 19 shooting as the lead would build to 55-16 at halftime.
 
SMSU continued its red-hot shooting in the second half making 15 of 32 field goals with four 3-pointers.  

UP NEXT 

SMSU is back in action on Friday, Jan. 5, taking on Bemidji State (3-7, 0-6 NSIC) with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The Mustangs then host St. Cloud State (7-3, 4-2 NSIC) on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 5:30 p.m.
