MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team tied a season-high 16 3-pointers to push itself past Winona State 78-61 in NSIC women's college basketball inside the R/A Facility on Saturday afternoon.
SMSU moves to 14-8 overall and jumps to 12-4 in NSIC play. The Warriors drop to 6-16 overall and 5-12 in the NSIC.
The Mustangs closed the night shooting 49 percent (26 of 53) from the field, including tying a season-high 16 3-pointers. WSU shot 40 percent (23 of 58) with five makes from beyond the arc.
Four Mustangs scored double figures with
Bri Stoltzman leading the way with 19 points on 5 of 6 shooting, including 100 percent (3 of 3) from deep.
Sam Wall tied a season-high six makes from deep, getting her 18 points with three assists.
Madison Gehloff and
Hannah Parsley combined for 23 points, with Parsley and Gehloff grabbing six rebounds apiece.
Alex Dornfeld led the Warriors with 11 points on 5 of 11 shooting and six rebounds, four assists.
Both teams traded points in the first five minutes of the game leading to an 11-11 tie with 5:29 left in the first quarter. Following the media timeout, Winona State held the Mustangs to 1 of 6 shooting in building an 18-14 advantage after 10 minutes of play.
WSU came out swinging in the second quarter on a 7-2 run backed by Olivia Gamoke and Vivica Bretton. SMSU devastated the Warriors for the remainder of the first half, holding WSU scoreless for nearly seven minutes while scoring bucket after bucket to take the 36-25 lead at the half.
Sam Wall drained two threes for SMSU on a 15-9 run to open the second half, leading 51-34 with just under six minutes remaining in the third quarter. WSU held SMSU scoreless for the next four minutes in cutting the score to 54-41.
Stoltzman scored the first four points in the final 10 minutes to give SMSU momentum early. Either team would not do much scoring in the dwindling minutes. Settling the score at 78-61
