First-half woes plague SMSU, fall to Bulldogs 72-57

DULUTH, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team fell 72-57 to the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs to split the season series 1-1 on Friday in NSIC women's basketball inside the Romano Gymnasium.

SMSU drops to 14-9 overall and 12-5 in the NSIC. UMD moves to 15-7 overall and 12-6 in conference play.

Bri Stoltzman and Hannah Parsley led the Mustangs with 16 and 10 points, respectively. Stoltzman made a team-high two 3-pointers, while Parsley drained a squad-best five shots at the free-throw line.

The Mustangs closed the night shooting 28 percent (17 of 60) from the field, including 6 of 24 from deep. The Bulldogs, led by Madelyn Granica with 12 points, shot 46 percent (25 of 54) from the field with seven 3-pointers.

Sam Wall got the Mustangs on the board with a 3-pointer at 9:25, but SMSU would fail to score for the next seven minutes before Bri Stoltzman got a layup to go with 2:47 left in the first quarter. UMD held SMSU to 18 percent shooting (3 of 17) in the first quarter in building a 24-7 lead after 10 minutes.

The Bulldogs picked up right where they left off, limiting the Mustangs' scoring to just two points through the first three minutes of the second frame. After a layup from Elizabeth Wagner, UMD pursued an 8-2 run for two minutes to push the score to 36-13 with just over three minutes left in the half. The Mustangs would score twice more before the end of the second quarter.

The Mustangs shot 11 percent (4 of 35) in the first half with just two makes from deep.

SMSU opened the second half 3 of 3 from the field, including a deep ball from Sam Wall. UMD answered every SMSU bucket following the Wall three, settling the score at 50-33. The Mustangs went on a 7-3 run to close the third period, getting all their points on the charity stripe.

UMD continued its on-point defense and strong shooting into the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs opened the final frame with a 13-9 run leading into the media timeout. UMD closed the game after making key shots down the stretch.
