Mustang volleyball announces Fall schedule

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University volleyball program recently announced its 2024 schedule with 27 regular season matches, including 10 inside the PE Gym. 
 
SMSU will start the season on the road with a pair of tournaments the first two weekends of September. SMSU will go to the West Florida Invitational in Pensacola, Fla., for the second consecutive season, with four matches on Sept. 6-7, before heading to Springfield, Mo., on Sept. 12-14 to play four matches at the Drury Invitational.   
 
The Mustangs open their 18-match Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schedule on Sept. 20-21 in North Dakota with Minot State on Sept. 20 and UMary on Sept 21. 

SMSU opens its home schedule with a non-conference match versus Augustana on Sept. 24, followed by a pair of conference contests against Northern State on Sept. 27 and MSU Moorhead on Sept. 28. 

Next up for SMSU is a three-match road swing taking on Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State on Oct. 4 and Oct. 6 respectively, before a midweek match on Oct. 8 at Augustana. 
 
The Mustangs kick-off a four-match over homecoming weekend taking on UMary on Oct. 11 and Minot State on Oct. 12, before welcoming Winona State on Oct. 18 and Concordia-St. Paul on Oct. 19
 
SMSU is back on the road for the last week of October, visiting Wayne State on Oct. 25 and Minnesota State on Oct. 31.
 
The Mustangs will have their final regular season home matches in early November, battling Sioux Falls on Nov. 2, before facing Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State on Nov. 8-9.
 
The Mustangs spend their final weekend of the season on the road, playing MSU Moorhead on Nov. 15 and Northern State on Nov. 16. 
 
The top eight teams in the final NSIC standings will advance to the NSIC tournament with the highest respective seed hosting the quarterfinal match-up. The semifinals and finals will be played on the campus of the NSIC regular season champion.

SMSU finished the 2023 season with an 23-7 overall record and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2018. The 2024 season marks the third for head coach Tyler Boddy, who hoists a 46-13 (.780) overall record since taking the position in December of 2021, giving him the highest winning percentage from an SMSU head coach in their first two seasons. SMSU has won 20 or more matches in 19 of the last 20 seasons.
