MARSHALL, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team runs its win streak to eight games with a 77-68 victory over the University of Mary Marauders in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Saturday evening inside the R/A Facility.
SMSU (16-2, 10-2 NSIC) finished the day shooting 25 of 63 (40 percent) from the field including 33 percent (6 of 18) from downtown.
UMary, which drops to 9-7 on the year and 6-6 in conference play, closed the game shooting 41 percent (24 of 58) from the field including shooting 4 of 20 (20 percent) from beyond the arc.
Bri Stoltzman led the SMSU offense with 22 points, five rebounds, five assists, and team-high four steals.
Audrey Swanson recorded 21 points, eight rebounds, and three steals.
Peyton Blandin finished with 13 points and three rebounds.
UMary started the game with a 3-0 run holding SMSU scoreless for nearly two and half minutes. SMSU would respond with a 6-0 run to take the lead with 4:27 minutes left in the first quarter. UMary would use a 9-5 run to end the first quarter to trail by one point.
Both teams opened the second quarter with a pair of free throws which allowed UMary to retake the lead 14-13. Both teams would trade-off the next 20 points to bring the score to 24-23 with 3:20 remaining in the second quarter. The Mustangs would use a 12-2 run to end the quarter and would go into halftime with an eight-point lead.
The Marauders began the third quarter with a pair of free throws, layups, and a jumper to go on an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to three points. SMSU and UMary traded off the next 12 points, but SMSU would continue to lead 43-41 with 5:48 left in the third quarter. UMary would use a 5-0 run late in the third quarter to bring the score within one point with 2:15 left in the quarter. The Mustangs would use a pair of layups and 3-pointer by
Bri Stoltzman to end the quarter leading 59-51.
SMSU would start the fourth quarter sinking a 3-pointer and a layup to increase its lead to 11 points. UMary would respond with a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to six points with 5:42 remaining in the game. The Marauders used a 9-0 run to hold SMSU scoreless for almost three minutes to bring the score within two points.
The Mustangs would finish the game going on an 11-4 run to close out the game 77-68.
SMSU will be back in action on the road versus Bemidji State on Friday, Jan. 24, with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
