THIS WEEK
•The nationally ranked Southwest Minnesota State University men's basketball team (18-4, 13-3 NSIC), currently in sole possession of first place in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference standings, continues road play on Wednesday at seventh place the University of Minnesota Duluth (14-7, 9-6 NSIC) with game time slated for 5:30 p.m. inside Romano Gymnasium in Duluth.
•SMSU was ranked No. 9 in the D2CSC Top 25 poll and No. 13 in the NABC Top 25 released last Tuesday. This week's polls will be released on Tuesday.
•SMSU had its season-high eight-game winning streak snapped last Thursday with an 85-75 home loss to Augustana but rebounded with an 88-81 road victory at the University of Sioux Falls on Saturday afternoon.
•Following Wednesday's game, SMSU will host Winona State on Saturday night for the annual 'Tropical Night' game.

    SMSU RANKED IN NABC & D2CSC TOP 25 POLLS
•SMSU moved up two spots and was ranked No. 13 in last week's NABC Top 25 poll released on Jan. 28.   
•SMSU, ranked No. 18 in the first regular season NABC poll on Nov. 19, dropped to No. 22 on Nov. 26, moved No. 18 on Dec. 3, was not ranked on Dec. 10, before moving back into the poll at No. 24 on Dec. 17. SMSU fell out of the poll on Dec. 31 and Jan. 7 before returning to No. 22 on Jan. 14, No. 15 on Jan. 21 and No. 13 on Jan. 28.
•SMSU was ranked No. 9, moving up one spot, in the D2 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Top 25 poll released last Tuesday.
•SMSU was No. 2 in last week's CSC Central Region poll. (Complete poll is listed on page 3). The CSC regional poll is not the official region rankings used by the NCAA. The official NCAA region rankings will be released starting Feb. 19.

    WIN TOTAL RANKS 10TH HIGHEST IN TEAM HISTORY
•SMSU has reached 18 victories for the second straight season and the 13th time in the program's 58 seasons. Last season's team won 19 games and advanced to the NCAA tournament.
•The 18 victories rank tied for the 10th highest single season win total in program history.
•SMSU has recorded six 20-win seasons all-time with the last coming in 2017-18.

    RECORD AFTER 20 GAMES TIES 2016-17 TEAM
•SMSU's 17-3 record following 20 games tied the 2016-17 team for the best mark in team history. Both teams however would lose game 21 on the schedule.

    SERIES HISTORY VERSUS MINNESOTA DULUTH
•SMSU and UMD meet for the 92nd time with UMD leading 53-38 in a series that began in 1972-73.
•SMSU won earlier this season, 79-66, in Marshall on Dec. 6. UMD was ranked No. 11 in the NABC Top 25 at the time of the game.
•SMSU has won eight of the last 10 and 20 of the last 24 since the 2005-06 season.
•UMD leads 35-10 in games played in Duluth and has won the last two games inside Romano Gymnasium, including 70-62 last season.
•SMSU head coach Brad Bigler is 16-4 all-time versus UMD.

    SMSU HEAD COACH BRAD BIGLER
•Brad Bigler, the all-time wins leader in program history, is in his 16th season as head coach with an overall record of 258-194, including 177-150 in NSIC play.  
•SMSU has played in four NCAA tournaments (2012, 2017, 2018, 2024) during his time as head coach.
•The 2012-13 and 2016-17 NSIC Coach of the Year, Bigler has led SMSU to 10 winning seasons, including one 28-win season, one 25-win season and three 19-win seasons.
•SMSU won NSIC tournament titles in 2012 and 2017 and won back-to-back NSIC South Division championships in 2016-17 and 2017-18. SMSU has played in five NSIC tournament championship games during his tenure (2010, 2012, 2017, 2018, 2019).
•The 11th head coach in team history, Bigler spent six seasons (2003-09) as an assistant coach at SMSU, including the last three as associate head coach.

    MUSTANGS BY THE NUMBERS
•SMSU has five players averaging double figures in scoring and six averaging 8.1 points or more.
•Sophomore Aeron Stevens is averaging a team-high 15.1 ppg and is tied for second with 5.9 rpg.  
•Junior Jakob Braaten has dished out a team-high 74 assists, is second in scoring at 14.9 ppg and is tied for second in rebounding at 5.9 rpg.
•Senior Dunwa Omot is third in scoring at 12.4 ppg and is second on the team with 32 3-pointers. He missed five games with an injury but returned last week scoring 23 points in both games versus Augustana and Sioux Falls with eight combined 3-pointers.
•Junior Mason Lund ranks tied for first with 6.1 rpg, is fifth in scoring at 10 ppg and is first with 39 3-pointers.
•Sophomore Steven Kramer is fourth in scoring at 10.2 ppg.
•Sophomore Mekhi Shaw has recorded a team-high 45 steals, ranks second with 61 assists and is averaging 8.1 ppg.
•SMSU is shooting 49 percent from the field, 37 percent from 3-point range, 77 percent from the free throw line and is plus-2.0 in rebound margin. The Mustangs are averaging 76 points per game, while opponents are averaging 67 ppg.

    MUSTANG TIP-OFF TIDBITS   
•Dunwa Omot is the second SMSU player this season to score 20 or more points in back-to-back games. He scored 23 versus Augustana last Thursday and poured in 23 points at Sioux Falls on Saturday. Jakob Braaten scored 25 versus UMary and 24 at Bemidji State earlier this season.
•SMSU tied a season-high with 22 free throws made in the win at Sioux Falls.  
•SMSU is 4-0 versus Top 25 teams this season which includes defeating a No. 1 ranked team for a second consecutive season.
•SMSU has shot the same or more free throws than its opponents in 18 of 22 games.

    NCAA & NSIC STATISTICS   
•In the Division II national statistics (Feb. 2), SMSU ranks second in fouls per game (12.4), 21st in field goal pct. defense (40.8), 25th in turnovers per game (10.6), 25th in free throw pct. (76.9), 27th in scoring defense (66.7) and 27th in field goal pct. (49.0).
•Mekhi Shaw ranks 27th in steals (45) and 51st in steals per game (2.0).
•In the NSIC stats (league games only), SMSU ranks first in scoring defense (66.3), first in field goal pct. (50.1), first in field goal pct. defense (40.8), first in free throw pct. (77.3), second in scoring margin (9.6), second in 3-point field goal pct. (39.3), second in 3-point field goal pct. defense (32.2) and second in steals (7.8).

    OMOT IN THE SMSU RECORD BOOK    
•Senior Dunwa Omot ranks 13th in team history with 1,318 points and is 22 points from tying Taylor Schafer (2015-19) for 12th on the all-time scoring list.
•He also ranks sixth in free throw pct. (83.4), seventh in 3-point field goals made (196) and seventh in 3-point field goals attempted (482). (see charts on page 4).

•Five current SMSU players: senior Dunwa Omot, junior Jakob Braaten, junior Mason Lund, sophomore Aeron Stevens and sophomore Steven Kramer have scored 20 or more points in a game during their careers.

    BRAATEN NAMED NSIC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
•Junior guard Jakob Braaten was named NSIC Player of the Week on Jan. 13 for the first time in his career.
•Braaten averaged 19.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals, while shooting 48 percent (15 of 31) from the field to help the Mustangs earn victories over MSU Moorhead and No. 4 ranked Minot State.

    CONSECUTIVE 3-POINT GAME STREAK ENDS
•SMSU's consecutive game streak of making at least one 3-point field goal came to an end earlier this season at 752 games when SMSU finished 0 for 6 in an overtime loss at Upper Iowa on Nov. 24.
•Prior to the Upper Iowa game, the last time SMSU failed to connect on a 3-pointer was on Dec. 11, 1998, versus MSU Moorhead at the North Dakota State Classic.

    SMSU PICKED 4TH IN NSIC PRESEASON POLL
•SMSU was picked to finish fourth in the 15-team NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
•SMSU senior guard Dunwa Omot was named a 'Player to Watch' in the NSIC.

    STEVENS SETS FRESHMAN RECORD IN 2023-24    
•Aeron Stevens set the school freshman record for free throws made and attempted in a single-season in 2023-24. He made 127 of 174 from the foul line with the 127 free throws made ranking eighth in team single-season history.
•Bob Throngard held the previous freshman record of 97 free throws made and 129 attempted during the program's first season in 1967-68.

    2023-24 DEFENSE ONE OF THE BEST IN TEAM HISTORY    
•For the second straight season in 2023-24, SMSU closed the NSIC campaign (22 games) ranking first in scoring defense (68.0), while ranking first in field goal pct. defense (39.7).
•SMSU opponents shot 41.1 percent shooting last season ranking as the second lowest in team history. The 2022-23 team set the school record at 39.9 percent.

    MUSTANGS AND THE CENTURY MARK
•SMSU last scored 100 points in a game on Feb. 1, 2019, versus Minnesota Crookston (100-78).
•SMSU is 40-8 all-time when scoring 100 points, including 8-2 under head coach Brad Bigler.

    WORKING OVERTIME
•SMSU is 0-1 in overtime games this season following a 79-78 road setback to Upper Iowa on Nov. 24.
•SMSU, which has lost five straight overtime games, last earned an overtime victory on Feb. 17, 2022, versus Wayne State.
•SMSU is 51-45 all-time in overtime games.

    SCOUTING MINNESOTA DULUTH
•The Bulldogs enter Wednesday's game 14-7 overall, 9-6 in NSIC play. After winning six straight games to start January, UMD suffered two straight losses before rebounding to beat Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday at home, 88-87.
•Senior forward Charlie Katona is scoring a team-leading 16.3 ppg with a team-high 126 field goals and is also the leader in rebounding at 7.0 per game.
•Sophomore guard Joshua Brown averages 11.7 ppg, is second in rebounding at 5.1 and leads the team with 46 assists.
•UMD is shooting 48 percent from the field, 36 percent from 3-point range, 65 percent from the free throw line and is plus-4.1 in rebound margin.
•UMD is averaging 77 points per game, while opponents are averaging 68 points per game.
•Head coach Justin Wieck is in his seventh season with a record of 136-55.
