Mustangs Split Two Conference Matches

ST. CLOUD, MINN.: The Southwest Minnesota State tennis team split two NSIC matches on Saturday in St. Cloud, losing 6-3 to Winona State before defeating Mary 9-0. SMSU is now 6-8 overall and 3-1 in the NSIC.

Against Winona State, the Warriors won all three doubles matches before splitting the singles matches. Ramona Lerch won for SMSU at No. 2 singles, defeating Mary Hesterman 6-1, 6-2. Also winning singles matches were Diana Naatz at No. 4 and Cailey Grupe at No. 5.

The Mustangs then overmatched the Marauders in their second match of the day, winning 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, before cruising to an 8-4 win at No. 2 and 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles. Ananda Ferrari and Trisha Baldwin were nearly perfect in singles. Ferrari won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 over Chelsey Stark, while Baldwin defeated Denise Bodensteiner 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Danielle Hildebrandt and Grupe each won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 and No.5, respectively.

SMSU will play Minnesota, Crookston at 3:30 in St. Cloud on Sunday. The match was previously scheduled to be in Marshall, along with another match with Briar Cliff (Iowa), but poor weather expected in Marshall moved the UMC match indoors and postponed the Briar Cliff match.
