EMPORIA, KAN.: The No. 12 ranked Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs suffered a tough loss to Winona State in the NCAA Regional Tournament as Winona earned a 8-1 victory over the Mustangs.
This marks the third time this season WSU had defeated SMSU as the Warriors won two last week in the NSIC Tournament. With the loss, the Mustangs fall to 39-11 overall.
Winona State had its bats swinging as they racked up three home runs in the game. WSU scored its first run in the second inning off a solo home run and then had a big third inning scoring five runs off of four hits and two homers.
The Mustangs scored its only run in the third as Erin Dickhausen led off the inning with a double and later scored on an RBI single from Amanda Burkhart.
Dickhausen led the SMSU offensive as she was 2-for-3 with two doubles in the game. The Mustangs finished the game with six total hits and while committing four errors while the Warriors had 10 hits.
Amanda Johnson suffered the loss on the mound as she pitched six innings while giving up eight hits and striking out five. Sara Silke pitched the last inning for Southwest.
SMSU will now face Minnesota State, Mankato today at 6:45 p.m.
