VERMILLION, S.D..: The Southwest Minnesota State University soccer team lost 4-3 in double overtime to South Dakota on Wednesday in a non-conference game. USD is SMSU's first NCAA Division I opponent in school history. The loss drops the Mustangs to 0-3 this season, while the Coyotes are now 1-2.
Freshman
Kelly Fitzgerald found the back of the net twice in the first 21 minutes of the game as SMSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Fitzgerald scored at the 5:16 mark, unassisted.
Brittany Oehlerking scored at 18:08 to make the score 2-0. Fitzgerald found the net one more time at 20:17, on an assist from defender
Tatum Borstad.
However, the Coyotes bounced back with two more in the first half as the Mustangs led 3-2 at the intermission. The two teams went scoreless for the first 38 minutes of the second half, before USD's Katie Quinones tied it up at 83:09 on South Dakota's second penalty kick goal of the game.
Sarah Halbach, who scored USD's first penalty kick goal, won the game in the second overtime as she scored unassisted at 107:55.
Kendra Olchefske made nine saves in net for SMSU.
Southwest will be off until Saturday, Sept. 13 when it hosts Augustana for a non-conference game at 3 p.m. in the Regional Event Center.
