BROOKINGS, S.D. – NCAA Division I South Dakota State connected on 10 three-pointers to defeat Southwest Minnesota State, ranked No. 21 in NCAA Division II, 95-70 on Tuesday night in Brookings, S.D.
SDSU, picked to finish fourth in the Summit League, improves to 4-5 overall, while SMSU lost its second straight and drops to 4-2 on the season.
Garrett Callahan led SDSU with 27 points and finished with four three-pointers on 8 of 10 shooting. Scott Roehl led SMSU with a career-high 22 points on 9 of 15 shooting.
SMSU was plagued by fouls all night long and had four players foul out in the contest. The Mustangs were called for 35 fouls, while SDSU was whistled for 16 fouls. SDSU ended the game connecting on 41 of 50 free throws, compared to just 14 of 19 for SMSU.
The Jackrabbits finished the game 10 of 17 from three-point range, while the Mustangs were just four of 20.
It was also the second straight game SMSU has allowed 80 or more points in a game for the first time since the 2004-05 season.
SDSU started the game red-shot from three-point range connecting on five of its first six three-point attempts to build a 25-9 lead with 10 minutes and 36 seconds left in the first half with the help of a 10-0 run with just under 14 minutes left after SMSU trailed 15-9 after the game's first six minutes.
SMSU answered with an Andrew Peschong basket and a three-pointer by Jon DeRock to cut the deficit to 25-14, but SDSU answered back with a 10-2 run to extend the lead to 35-16 with 5:54 left in the half.
The Mustangs closed the half strong limiting the Jackrabbits to just four points in the final 4:23 to cut the deficit to 41-28 at halftime.
Peschong led SMSU with six points in the first half, while DeRock chipped in with five points.
SDSU finished the first half with a 28-14 rebound advantage, including 10 offensive rebounds leading to 10 second chance points. SMSU was also in foul trouble in the half committing 15 fouls compared to just seven by SDSU. The Jacks finished 14 of 17 from the free throw line in the opening half, while SMSU was just 5 of 8.
SDSU started the second half hot from long range again hitting on five three-pointers to build a 61-34 lead six minutes and 20 seconds into the half. SMSU struggled from the field to start the second half making just three of 12 shot attempts in the first four and a half minutes.
SMSU trailed 49-34 with 16 minutes left in the game but SDSU put the game away with a 12-0 run over the next two and a half minutes and never looked backed. SDSU led 66-41 with 11:45 remaining but SMSU didn't quit and answered with its longest run of the game scoring seven straight points on a lay-up by Peschong, a three-pointer by Jordan Miller and a lay-up by Scott Roehl to cut the deficit to 66-48 with 10:28 left in the game but SDSU continued to make free throws and never let SMSU back into the contest.
SMSU had two other players score in double figures with Miller and Peschong both chipping in with 12 points. Roehl and Peschong each grabbed a team-high five rebounds.
SMSU, 0-1 in the NSIC, will return to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action this weekend hosting Northern State on Friday, Dec. 11 and the University of Mary on Saturday, Dec. 12. Both games will tip-off at 8 p.m.
