Mustangs Notch First Win of Season

Box Score

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.
- The Southwest Minnesota State softball team picked up its first win of the young 2009 season Friday afternoon, defeating Nebraska-Kearney 4-3 at the RMAC/NSIC Crossover Tournament in Colorado Springs, Colo.

SMSU improves to 1-1, while UNK drops to 1-1.

Sara Silke picked up the win for the Mustangs, tossing a complete game and allowing four hits and three runs.

Playing in just her second collegiate game, freshman Christine Borowiak led SMSU offensively, going 2 for 4 with two RBI.

The Mustangs got on the board in the opening inning after Borowiak doubled to score Meghan Laetsch, who was walked to get on base.  Amanda Burkhart then nailed a double of her own to score Borowiak and make it 2-0.

UNK, however, answered in the second inning, driving in two runs to knot the game at 2-2.

The next two innings went scoreless, but the drought was quenched in the fifth when Borowiak drilled a triple to score Laetsch from first base.  Borowiak then scored when Burkhart managed to reach first on an error to make it 4-2.

UNK made a late surge in the seventh, posting one run before SMSU used a force at third to finish the contest.

SMSU meets up with Ft. Lewis tomorrow at 1 p.m. CST.
