KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Southwest Minnesota State softball team went 1-1 on Monday morning at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla., defeating Massachusetts-Lowell 8-1 and falling to Wayne State (Mich.) 5-0
The day started bright for SMSU when the Mustangs faced of with UMASS-Lowell.
The Mustangs exploded for six runs in the opening inning.
Jessica Paczosa was the first to score for SMSU as she crossed the plate via a throwing error. Just three batters later
Amanda Tucci hit a grand slam to make the score 5-0.
UMASS-Lowell hit in a run in the bottom of the first to get on the board, but was the last time the River Hawks would score.
Nicole Kelley pinch hit in the fifth inning and slapped a two run double to put the Mustangs up 7-0.
And the Mustangs sealed the deal in the sixth inning when
Christine Borowiak hit a sacrifice fly to score
Krista Steen from third.
Johnson picked up the win for SMSU, going a complete game and striking out nine.
In its second meeting with Wayne State (Mich.) in as many days, the Warriors again held SMSU scoreless, defeating the Mustangs 5-0.
Alina Honken took the loss--her second of the season--for the Mustangs. She threw seven innings, allowing 10 hits.
Amanda Burkhart posted the only hit for SMSU, a single coming in the bottom of the second inning.
WSU broke a 0-0 tie in the third inning, scoring three runs to go up 3-0. The Warriors added a pair of runs in the sixth to secure the win.
SMSU, 7-9 overall, will play New Haven (Conn.) and Adelphi (N.J.) tomorrow at 8 a.m. CST and 10 a.m. CST.
