SMSU Women's Golf Selected for NCAA Regional Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The NCAA Division II women's golf national committee announced Monday night that Southwest Minnesota State University is one of nine teams selected to compete in the 54-hole NCAA Division II Super Regional Three Tournament held at Westward Ho Country Club in Sioux Falls, S.D., on May 4-6.

It's the sixth time SMSU has been selected to the NCAA regional tournament but the first since 2006.  SMSU made five straight appearances in the regional tournament from 2002-06.

The Mustangs were seeded ninth in the nine-team championship with Upper Iowa earning the region's No. 1 seed.  Concordia-St. Paul was seeded second, followed by Minnesota State Mankato, Fort Hays State (Kan.), and Mesa State (Colo.) rounding out the top five.  Augustana was seeded sixth, followed by Winona State, Montana State-Billings and SMSU.

Four individuals from Minnesota State Moorhead, Nebraska-Kearney, Adams State and Wayne State were also selected to round out the 49-person tournament field.

Southwest Minnesota State will begin first round action on Monday, May 4, at 9:55 a.m.  The second round will take place on Tuesday, May 5, with the third and final round on Wednesday, May 6.

The regional will consist of both team and individual competition conducted concurrently.  All participants will compete throughout the 54 holes of competition.  The top three teams along with the top three individuals not with a national qualifying team from each of the four regionals will advance to the national championships held May 13-16 at Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio.

SMSU's highest finish in a regional tournament was third place in 2004, while finishing fourth three times (2002, 2005, 2006) and sixth once (2003).

SMSU has had two individuals compete in the NCAA Championships in school history.  Laura Lundbohm finished 26th in 2001 and 22nd in 2003, while Erin Oakland finished 29th in 2004.

The three other regionals will also be held next week throughout the country.  The Super Regional One Tournament will be held on May 3-5 at Cedarbrook Golf Course in California, Penn., while the Super Regional Two Tournament will also be held on May 3-5 at Mission Hill Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.  The Super Regional Four Tournament will be played May 4-6 at Ironwood Golf and Country Club in Omaha, Neb.
