Mustang Wrestlers Prepare for Triangular at USF and Open at Buena Vista

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team will compete in a triangular tomorrow afternoon against the University of Sioux Falls and Wayne State's club team in Sioux Falls, S.D. starting at 4 p.m. The Mustangs will also compete in the Beuna Vista Open on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Last time out:
Southwest Minnesota State hosted its first home dual of the season on Dec. 2 against Morningside College. The Mustangs needed a come-from-behind effort to tie the Mustangs from Morningside College 18-18. The Mustangs found themselves behind 18-15 heading into the final match of the evening at 285 pounds, before SMSU's Todd Klemz came away with an 11-7 decision over Tyler Thompson to tie the dual 18-18.

The Mustangs fell behind early after 125-pounder Seife Kenea was pinned at 1:27 of the first period by Kory Kistner giving the Morningside Mustangs a 6-0 lead. The Mustangs fired right back when Justin Reinsma picked up a pin for SMSU at 4:48 to win at 133 pounds.

Mustang redshirt freshman Justin Reinsma finished a perfect 3-0 to take home first place honors at 133 pounds in the Red Bracket at the MSU Moorhead Dragon Open in Moorhead, Minn., last Saturday.

Reinsma was one of nine SMSU wrestlers to finish sixth or higher on Saturday.

In the Red bracket, Brian Beilke also placed at 133 as he finished with a record of 2-2. At 149 pounds, junior David Albrecht earned third place with a strong 4-1 mark. Senior C.D. Johnson racked up a 4-2 record at 184 pounds to earn fourth place, while Micah Larson finished in fifth place with a record of 3-2. Junior Devin Terry was sixth at 141 pounds, while sophomore Martin Hagen finished in sixth place with a record of 3-2.

In the White bracket, freshman Ethan Hildebrandt advanced to the final at 141 with a perfect 3-0 mark before falling in the finals by a 3-1 score. Freshman Blaine Miller took home sixth place honors at 165, ending the day with a record of 1-3.

133-pounder on a tear: Redshirt freshman Justin Reinsma (Slayton, Minn.) finished the week 4-0, including winning the Red Bracket at the Dragon Open in Moorhead on Saturday with a perfect 3-0 record. Reinsma, a 133-pounder, opened the week on Thurday night winning by Fall at 4:48 over Jake McManigal during SMSU's 18-18 dual match tie versus Morningside College. On Saturday, Reinsma opened the tournament with a 9-2 victory over Tossaporn Suparat from Augsburg, before advancing to the finals with a victory by fall at 6:30 over Evan Forde from MSU Moorhead. Reinsma capped the day with a 12-2 win over Cody Madsen from Augsburg in the finals. Reinsma is now 10-4 on the season.

Veteran presence:
CD Johnson enters the triangular with a record of 13-8 on the season. Johnson picked up a win in SMSU's only dual of the season picking up a 5-1 decision. Draper was a part of the comeback against Morningside earning a 10-7 decision over Morningside's John Sievert. Johnson has recorded two pins on the season.

Nationally ranked: Heavyweight Brian Rodas enters the 2010-11 season ranked No. 8 in the country at 285 pounds in the first edition of national rankings released on Wednesday, Oct. 21 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Rodas is the first Mustang wrestler to be ranked this season. He is coming off an NCAA tournament appearance in 2009-10. Rodas qualified for the national tournament last season as a heavyweight.

National qualifiers:
The 2010-11 Mustangs return two national qualifiers from last season. Brian Rodas and CD Johnson both qualified for the NCAA tournament last season. Johnson earned a spot in the national tournament at 184 pounds.

Experienced returners:
Demond Carter and AJ Jenniges will add to the veteran leadership for the Mustangs. Carter just missed out on a national tournament berth last season. Carter spent two weeks in the national rankings last season as well. The 146 pounder spent time ranked sixth and eighth in the country last season. He was the only Mustang Wrestler to earn a national ranking last season. Jenniges compiled a 14-11 record in his freshman season for the Mustangs.

Talented newcomers:
The 2010 recruiting class combined for a 1,448-363 career high school record. The class had 29 state tournament appearances last year. 22 of those placed in the state tournament and 10 were finalists. Zach Coates highlight the incoming freshman and will look to contribute to the Mustangs on the mat in their freshman season. Coates was a six-time letterwinner at Henry Sibley High School who appeared in three state tournaments and finished his season with a 39-2 record.

According to the coaches:
The Mustangs were picked to finish fifth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. SMSU earned 14 points and a tie with MSU Moorhead for the fifth place spot in the preseason poll. St. Cloud State earned 67 points and the top spot in the preseason poll.
