SMSU VS. SCSU BOX SCORE

ST. CLOUD, Minn.
- Southwest Minnesota State split its opening two games of the 2010 season on Saturday morning, defeating Wisconsin-Superior 4-1 but falling to St. Cloud State 13-3 in five innings at the Husky Dome Invite in St. Cloud, Minn.

In the SMSU-UWS match-up, Meaghan Laetsch and Christine Borowiak each finished with two hits and an RBI for the Mustangs in the win.

Cortney Heim worked a complete game for SMSU in picking up her first win as a Mustang. She allowed five hits and one run and struck out 10 batters.

SMSU jumped on the board first after a pair of doubles from Krista Steen and Laetsch in the first inning allowed Steen to score the Mustangs' first run of 2010.

The Mustangs tacked on another run in the second inning when Britney Hallahan doubled and later scored on a UWS error to set up a 2-0 lead for SMSU.

After a scoreless third and fourth, UWS cut the deficit in half with its first run of the contest. SMSU quickly answered in the top of the sixth and seventh with a pair of insurance runs via Borowiak and Amy Dreesen.

SMSU struggled in its follow-up tilt with SCSU, though the Mustangs early on looked poised to notch another victory.

The Mustangs got two hits each from Laetsch, Amanda Neumann and Katie Turner in the loss.

In the first inning, Laetsch ripped a triple to left field to open scoring in the contest, scoring Steen, who had walked from her lead-off spot. Dreesen followed that with a single to score Laetsch. Turner scored what would be SMSU's last run of the game after she singled to drive in Dreesen.

After a scoreless seventh inning, SCSU nudged back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to trim the deficit to one. A four-run seventh inning and seven-run fifth inning from the Huskies cut the contest short after five.

Honken took the loss for the Mustangs, going 3.1 innings and allowing nine hits and six runs.

SMSU finishes play at the Husky Dome Invite tomorrow, playing Dakota State at 11 a.m. and Bemidji State at 3 p.m.
