Mustangs Open Rebel Spring Games with Split

SMSU VS. SHU BOX SCORE
SMSU VS. SVSU BOX SCORE

KISSIMMEE, Fla.
– The Southwest Minnesota State softball team split a pair of games in its opening contests at the Rebel Spring Games on Sunday in Kissimmee, Fla., defeating Seton Hill (Pa.) 6-0 but falling to No. 13 Saginaw Valley State (Mich.) 5-0.

SMSU moves to 4-2 on the season.

In the first game of the day, Meaghan Laetsch finished 2 for 4, while Christine Borowiak and Amanda Voss each tallied a hit and a pair of RBIs to lead the Mustangs to their fifth win of the season.

The Mustangs got a complete game from Ali Honken against SHU, which falls to 2-5; the junior allowed just two hits and struckout six batters in the shutout.

The Mustangs got the board first in the bottom of the opening inning after Krista Steen walked and made her way home via a stolen base and a pair of passed balls.

SMSU tacked on three more in the bottom of the third inning after Voss singled to score Borowiak and Amy Dreessen, who had both reached base on walks. Britney Hallahan doubled in the ensuing at bat to score Voss and put the Mustangs up 4-0.

A pair of insurance runs from SMSU in the bottom of the fourth inning—both driven in by Borowiak—gave the Mustangs a decisive 6-0 lead as neither team would score for the remainder of the game.

SMSU, however, did not fare so well against nationally ranked SVSU.  Cardinals hurler Kari Bowlby effectively shut down the Mustangs, holding them to just four hits and tossing a shutout.

SVSU, which improves to 6-1 with the win, opened with a two-run first inning and followed it with one run in the second and another two in the third.

The Mustangs got one hit each from Steen, Dreessen, Borowiak and Katie Turner.

SMSU will play Ferris State (Mich.) and Truman State (Mo.) tomorrow at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
