SMSU Sweeps Northern State in NSIC Doubleheader

GAME 1 BOX SCORE
GAME 2 BOX SCORE

MARSHALL, Minn.
- Southwest Minnesota State got home runs from Kiley Petersen and Christine Borowiak in Game 1 and Lauren Smith tossed a shutout in Game 2 as the Mustangs swept Northern State 9-1 and 7-0 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Marshall.

SMSU improves to 11-10 (4-2 NSIC), while NSU falls to 5-19 (1-7 NSIC).

Behind a 13-hit performance in game one, SMSU ended the game in five innings per the eight-run rule.

Meaghan Laetsch, Amanda Neumann, Andrea Fennern and Petersen each collected two hits.  Petersen also finished with three RBIs.

Cortney Heim worked all five innings in the circle for SMSU, allowing five hits and giving up just one run.  She fanned five Wolf batters and moves to 6-3 on the season.

SMSU scattered its nine runs across all five innings.

The Mustangs answered a one-run first inning from NSU with a three-run inning of their own.

Borowiak nailed a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning, and a double from Krista Steen and ensuing double from Amanda Neumann to score Steen put SMSU ahead 3-1.

The Wolves would not score for the remainder of the contest.

SMSU added another run to its advantage in the bottom of the second when Fennern singled and was driven in three batters later when Amy Dreessen doubled to center field.

The Mustangs stretched their advantage to 8-1 in the third and fourth innings--pushing in two runs in each of those frames.  Petersen hit in half of those runs in the third with her two-run homer.  SMSU's two runs in the fourth came after Meaghan Laetsch stole home and Petersen drew a bean with the bases loaded.

Amanda Voss and Fennern teamed up to end the contest early in the fifth inning.  Fennern led off the inning with bunt single, advanced to third on a Wolf error on the next play and was pushed in by a Voss single.

Whitney Luhring and Brooke Norris each had two hits in game one to pace the Wolves.  Kelli Bornander (4-11) took the loss for NSU.

In Game 2, Smith tossed a complete-game shutout to pick up her first win of the season. It was also her first start of the season, and the junior showed patience in the circle.  She did not need to record one strikeout and was strong defensively, knocking down numerous ground balls and snagging a pair of hard hit line drives.  She forced a total of 11 groundouts.

SMSU received two hits apiece from Laetsch, Dreessen, and Neumann.  Borowiak and Katie Turner each registered two RBIs.

The contest was scoreless until the fourth inning when SMSU exploded, scoring five runs on five hits.  A Turner double, Fennern single and Laetsch triple scored three runs, and Laetsch crossed the plate after a wild pitch to round out the surge.

The Mustangs added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after Borowiak doubled to score Dreessen and Hallahan, who had singled earlier.

Smith forced two groudouts--outs one and three--in the top of the seventh, and Jacey Fry gunned down a Wolf runner at home from left field to retire NSU for the win.

Ashley Gabler recorded to hits to lead the Wolves; Rachel South (1-5) was tagged with the loss for NSU.

SMSU will host the University of Mary tomorrow at 12 p.m. in an NSIC doubleheader.
