Mustang Baseball Completes Four-Game Sweep

CROOKSTON, Minn. – Andrew Kinney became Southwest Minnesota State's all-time leader in runs batted in and helped lead the Mustangs to a doubleheader sweep over Minnesota, Crookston on Sunday. 

 

SMSU (13-11, 9-5 NSIC) won 9-5 and 10-5 to complete a four-game sweep.

 

Kinney finished the day with four RBI and now has 152 in his career, breaking the 23-year-old record of 150 set by Rich Rhinesmith (1984-87).

 

In the opener, Cody Curry and Chris Eichten paced a 17-hit Mustang attack with three hits each, while Curry, Derick Swenson and Matt Bauer all added two RBI.

 

Mustang starter Brad Haag earned the victory tossing a solid seven innings.  Haag tossed 88 pitches in the game, including 70 for strikes.  He finished recording four strikeouts and didn't walk a batter.

 

The Mustangs jumped on the board early scoring three runs in the first inning.  With one out, singles by Cody Curry and Andrew Kinney and a ground out by Matt Bauer scored SMSU's first run.  Tyler Fayden then added a run-scoring double, before Chris Eichten followed with an RBI single.

 

SMSU added to the lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Derick Swenson and an RBI double by Curry.  Kinney then made it 6-0 with a sac fly, before Bauer extended the margin to 7-0 on an RBI single.

 

UMC cut the lead to 7-2 after six innings, before SMSU pushed across two in the seventh as Swenson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Curry added a sac fly to give SMSU a 9-2 lead.

 

UMC scored three runs in the seventh to pull to within 9-5, but Tyler Paulson retired six of seven batters he faced in the last two innings to preserve the victory.

 

In game two, Adam Schrader tossed six shutout innings allowing just three hits, while striking out three and walking none to even his record to 3-3 on the season. 

 

Kinney, Fayden and Eichten each collected two hits with Kinney recording three RBI and Fayden adding two RBI.

 

SMSU opened up a 1-0 game with eight runs in the second inning.  Highlighting the inning were two-run doubles by Kinney and Fayden.  Tyler Jendro also added an RBI double, while Eicten drove in a run with a base hit.

 

Kinney then belted a solo home run in the sixth inning to push the margin to 10-0, before UMC scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh.

 

SMSU continues its six-game road trip on Wednesday, April 14, with a conference doubleheader at Bemidji State University starting at 2 p.m.
