MARSHALL, Minn. - The University of Mary got strong performances from its pitchers, including a shutout performance by Brenda Langston, en route to sweeping Southwest Minnesota State 5-3 and 6-0 Sunday afternoon in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader in Marshall.
U-Mary improves to 22-12 (7-3 NSIC), while SMSU drops to 11-12 (4-4 NSIC).
Melissa Gonzalez registered a 3 for 4 afternoon in game one to lead the Marauders to the opening contest victory. Ashley Watson (9-4) worked a complete game in the circle, allowing eight hits and one earned run.
U-Mary used three hits to score three runs in the opening inning and followed it with one run in the second and another in the third to move ahead 5-0.
SMSU wouldn't get on the board until the fourth inning when
Krista Steen doubled and was driven in one batter later by
Amanda Neumann.
The Mustangs added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after Britney Hallahan singled down the left-field line to score
Kiley Petersen and
Andrea Fennern, who had singled earlier in the inning.
SMSU was retired in order in the bottom of the seventh to close the game.
The Mustang pitching staff took on a different look in game one.
Cortney Heim was tagged with the loss, dropping her to 4-5 on the season. She was replaced by
Chelsey Evans late in the first inning; Evans tossed 2.1 innings before Neumann was pulled from her spot at shortstop to finish the game. The appearance was Neumann's first of her career, and the freshman did not give up a run, working 4.0 innings and allowing four hits.
Christine Borowiak and Petersen each collected two hits in the loss.
The Mustangs stuck with Neumann for game two as she made her first career start and gave up four runs--two earned--on five hits in 1.2 innings.
Lauren Smith relieved Neumann in the second inning and finished the game, allowing six hits and one earned run.
SMSU struggled offensively, recording just three hits.
The Marauders received a 4 for 4 performance from Dre Brunskill, who was just a double away from hitting for the cycle.
U-Mary scored five runs in the second inning, using five hits to take the decisive lead. The Marauders tacked on one run in the seventh.
The Mustangs left 16 runners on base between the two games.
SMSU will close this eight-game homestand on Wednesday, hosting St. Cloud State at 2 p.m.
