ST. CLOUD, Minn. - By winning three matches in the tiebreaker set the Southwest Minnesota State tennis team defeated Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opponent Minnesota Duluth 8-1, Sunday afternoon in St. Cloud, Minn.
SMSU improves to 8-7 (4-4 NSIC), while UMD falls to 5-4 (3-4 NSIC).
SMSU took all three doubles matches with
Angie Wiegmann and
Amy Daniels winning their match 9-8 after an 8-6 win in the tiebreaker set against Jessica Strensrud and Anna Bertrang.
The Mustangs continued to win the next six singles matches led by
Danielle Hildebrandt who defeated Katie Bolf in three sets with a final of 7-5, 1-6, and 10-7.
Cailey Grupe battled back after dropping her first set to Brittany Thompson 6-3. She came back to win the next match 6-2 and the super-tiebreaker 10-3.
SMSU will finish a four-match series at home tomorrow at 4 p.m. when they take on Northern Sun Intercollegiate competitor Augustana at Legion Field.
