GAME 2 BOX SCORE
MARSHALL, Minn. -
Amanda Neumann went 3 for 3 and
Ali Honken threw 3.1 shutout innings to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 4-1 victory over St. Cloud State in game one of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon in Marshall. SCSU topped the Mustangs 8-6 in game two.
SMSU moves to 12-13 (5-5 NSIC), while SCSU is now 19-15 (6-6 NSIC).
Honken allowed just two hits in her 3.1 innings of shutout work in game one; she also struckout five Husky batters.
Neumann added one RBI to her three-hit performance.
Meaghan Laetsch and
Christine Borowiak also collected two hits each.
The Mustangs opened scoring in the bottom of the third inning after
Meaghan Laetsch singled to lead off and was driven in two batters later by an
Amy Dreessen single. Dreessen would score late in the inning after Neumann drove a hard hit back to the circle. SMSU had runners at second and third with one out, but
Kiley Petersen hit a line drive into a double play to close the inning.
The Huskies pushed across one run in the top of the fourth after Mustang hurler
Lauren Smith took a hard line drive to the torso, which allowed an SCSU score from third. Honken replaced Smith and closed the inning with a strikeout.
The Mustangs used two hits in the fifth and sixth innings to add a pair of insurance runs. Singles form Neumann, Petersen, Laetsch and
Andrea Fennern keyed the scores.
SMSU retired the Huskies in four batters to close the contest.
The Huskies received three hits from Emily Edgerton in game two to pick up the 8-6 victory. Brit Krieg went 5.3 innings for SCSU to record the win.
Borowiak finished 3 for 4 with an RBI to lead the Mustangs. Turner was also 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while Neumann drove in three runs with her double.
The two squad were tied at 1-1 heading into the fourth inning, but SCSU unloaded for a four-run inning that would be its decisive lead-taking effort. The Huskies took advantage of two Mustang errors and registered four hits in the inning to take a 5-1 lead.
SCSU spread out six hits between the fifth and sixth innings to take an 8-1 lead, but SMSU looked poised to make a run at rally in the bottom half of the sixth.
The Mustangs did much of the work with two outs in that inning. Neumann pushed in three runs when she smacked a two-out double to left field. Turner drove in another run off her single before
Amanda Voss grounded to end the inning.
SMSU retired SCSU in order in the top of the seventh.
After a pair of groundouts from the Mustangs to open the seventh, SMSU was again forced to work from two outs. Borowiak hit in SMSU's lone run of the final inning when she doubled to score Dreessen, who had singled one batter earlier. Steen kept the drive alive with an ensuing single, but a Neumann groundout to the pitcher--which she nearly outran--ended the contest.
Cortney Heim took the loss for the Mustangs. She entered the game in the second inning to relieve starter Neumann. In 2.0 innings of work, the sophomore, who falls to 6-5, did not allow an earned run but did give up two runs. Honken finished the game for SMSU, tossing the final 3.2 innings.
The Mustangs will travel to Bemidji State and Minnesota Duluth this weekend for a pair of NSIC doubleheaders.
