MARSHALL, Minn. – Andrew Kinney belted two home runs to become the school's all-time home run leader and helped Southwest Minnesota State to a sweep of Upper Iowa in NSIC baseball on Sunday.

SMSU won the opener 6-2 behind a complete game five-hitter from Jared Pick and completed the sweep with an 8-4 victory in game two.  The Mustangs have now won a school single-season record 11 straight games and improves to 19-11 overall, 15-5 NSIC.  It was also SMSU's third four-game sweep in conference play this season, the first time an SMSU team has done that since 2002.

Kinney's two-out solo homer in the bottom of the first in game two was his 43rd of his career, moving past Colby Pack, who hit 42 homers from 2003-06.

In game one, Pick was outstanding, tossing his first career nine-inning complete game, allowing just two unearned runs in the ninth inning.  Pick allowed just five hits and one walk, while striking out seven.  He tossed 125 pitches, including 82 for strikes and he moves his record to 4-2 on the season.

SMSU finished with 12 hits in the game one victory, with Adam Thygesen and Cody Curry each finishing with three hits, while Tyler Jendro collected a pair of hits.

The game was scoreless until the third inning when Andrew Kinney put his name atop the SMSU record book.  Kinney belted a 2-0 pitch over the right field fence for his 42nd career home run, tying Colby Pack for the all-time lead in school history.

SMSU extended the lead in the fourth inning scoring a pair of runs on a throwing error and a wild pitch to take a 3-0 lead.

Matt Bauer extended the lead to 4-0 in the seventh with an RBI single to score Curry, before SMSU added two more runs in the eighth on an RBI double by Andy Williamson and single by Curry.

In the nightcap, the Mustangs collected 11 hits with Bauer pacing the offense going 3-for-4, while Thygesen finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.  Tyler Fayden and Chris Eichten each added two hits, while Derick Swenson had two RBI.

Brad Haag moved to 4-2 on the season, pitching the first five innings, allowing just one run on four hits, with three strikeouts and two walks.

Kinney gave SMSU an early lead with two outs in the first inning slamming the record-breaking homer.  Upper Iowa answered with a two-out single in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1.

The Mustangs regained the lead in the bottom of the inning as Swenson drilled a two-out, two-run single to center field to give SMSU a 3-1 lead.

SMSU added to the lead in the third loading the bases with one out following singles by Bauer and Fayden and a hit by pitch by Jendro. Thygesen then came up with a clutch three-run double down the left field line to push the lead to 6-1.

SMSU capped its scoring in the fifth inning on an RBI sac bunt by Bobby Zellman and a balk by UIU pitcher Trey Cook.

Southwest Minnesota State continues its eight-game homestand on Wednesday, April 21, taking on league-leading Winona State starting at 2 p.m.
