NSIC-Leading Augie Sweeps Mustangs

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference-leading and No. 12-ranked Augustana spread 19 runs across two games to sweep Southwest Minnesota State 13-4 and 6-3 in a conference doubleheader Thursday in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Augie improves to 33-8 (15-1 NSIC), while SMSU drops to 14-17 (7-9 NSIC).

Krista Steen and Amanda Neumann each collected two hits for the Mustangs in Game 1. Neumann also finished with two RBIs, while Amy Dreessen smashed a two-run homer to register a pair of RBIs.

Dreessen went to work early in the first inning, taking the second pitch she saw and sending it deep to left center for her third home run of the year. The shot scored Brittney Hallahan, who had singled to lead off the game.

The Vikings answered with one run in the bottom half of the inning.

The league-leading Vikings got their bats going in the second inning, using five hits to drive in six runs and take a 7-2 lead.

Augie extended that advantage to 9-2 with two runs in the third inning. The Vikings added another four runs in the fourth to take a 13-2 lead and set up a five-inning game

Hits from Borowiak, Neumann and Steen scored two runs for SMSU in the top of the fifth, but a 13-4 score ended the contest early.

Four Mustang pitchers saw action in the loss. Ali Honken started the contest and pitched 1.1 innings; she gave up six runs and was tagged with the loss. Cortney Heim, Chelsey Evans and Lauren Smith all saw time to finish the game.

The Mustangs again took an early lead in Game 2. SMSU jumped ahead 1-0 in th second inning when Borowiak singled up the middle to lead off the inning. Steen would follow with a double before Kiley Petersen singled two batters later to score Borowiak.

A Traci Fransen home run for Augie in the bottom half of the inning evened the contest at 1 apiece.

After a scoreless third inning, Augie took its first lead when Kelsey Kalkman hit a solo home run to lead off the top of the fourth. The Vikings added two more runs to take a 4-1 advantage.

The Mustangs would close the gap in the in the sixth inning. Neumann and Petersen opened the frame with a pair of singles, and Amanda Voss followed with a single to score both runners and move it to a 4-3 contest.

Brittany Coufal answered on behalf of the Vikings, leading off the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run. A double from Elizabeth Murray scored one more Viking run to close the inning.

The Mustang were retired in order in the top of the seventh inning.

Borowiak put together another solid performance for SMSU in Game 2, going 3 for 4; Petersen was a perfect 3 for 3 with one RBI. Voss collected two RBIs.

Heim took the loss for the Mustangs, giving up four runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings pitched. Neumann finished in relief. She gave up two runs on five hits in the final 2.2 innings.

SMSU returns home this weekend, hosting Minnesota, Crookston on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Minnesota State Moorhead on Sunday at 12 p.m.
