Augustana Completes Sunday Sweep; Two Teams Meet Monday in Marshall

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Augustana College pounded out 21 hits to earn an 18-11 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in game one of a doubleheader, then held off a late SMSU rally in the nightcap to earn a 9-5 victory and sweep a twinbill in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The two teams will conclude the four-game series tomorrow in Marshall starting at 1 p.m.  SMSU (20-14, 16-8 NSIC) holds a one-game lead over Augie (28-20, 15-9 NSIC) in the league standings.

The 21 hits and 18 runs allowed in Game 1 were the most by an SMSU opponent this season.

Andrew Kinney led the SMSU offense with three hits, including belting a pair of home runs and finishing with four RBI.  Matt Bauer also had a big day with four hits, while Derick Swenson added three hits.

Jared Pick suffered the loss for the Mustangs allowing eight runs, six earned in 4.1 innings, while striking out one and walking three.

SMSU led 3-0 in the third inning, but Augie answered with five runs in the third to take a 5-3 lead.  The Mustangs retook the lead in the fifth inning on a two-run triple by Josh Wendland and an RBI single by Andy Williamson.

That was the last lead for SMSU as the Vikings came right back with three in the fifth to take an 8-6 lead. 

SMSU trimmed the lead to 8-7 in the sixth, but the Vikings added a single run in the sixth and then put the game away with a six-run seventh inning and never looked back.

In Game 2, SMSU was held to just four hits, with Tyler Fayden leading the offense with one hit and two RBI.

SMSU jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI  fielder's choice by Bauer.  Augie tied the game in the bottom of the second, before SMSU gained a 2-1 lead in the third on a sac fly by Tyler Fayden.

The Vikings came right back on SMSU starter Brad Haag in the bottom of the third scoring two runs, then added six more in the fourth to build a 9-2 lead.

Fayden hit an RBI double in the fifth to make it 9-3, before SMSU" put together another threat in the top of the sixth.  The Mustangs loaded the bases with no outs and then used back-to-back walks by Derick Swenson and Cody Curry to trim the lead to 9-5.  The Vikings were able to escape the jam as Kinney lined out, Bauer struck out and Fayden flied out to end the inning.

Haag suffered the loss, allowing nine runs, five earned, on nine hits in 3.2 innings with four strikeouts and two walks.
