MARSHALL, Minn. - A five-run fifth inning from Minnesota, Crookston in Game 1 keyed a 6-4 Golden Eagle victory over Southwest Minnesota State Sunday afternoon in Marshall.  SMSU rebounded to win Game 2 10-1 in five innings.

The win by UMC in Game 1 marks the first time SMSU has lost to the Golden Eagles since the series began in 2001.  SMSU had won 19 straight games against UMC heading into Sunday's doubleheader.

SMSU moves to 15-18 (8-10 NSIC); UMC is now 7-27 (3-15 NSIC).

UMC's five-run spurt in the top of the fifth inning in Game 1 erased a 2-1 Mustang lead and put the Golden Eagles ahead 6-2.

SMSU was held scoreless from the fourth inning on until Christine Borowiak homered in the bottom of the seventh to push in two runs.  The UMC lead, however, stuck as the Golden Eagles were able to exit the inning and the game without giving up their lead.

Erin Fowle worked a complete game for UMC, allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out 10 Mustang batters.

Cortney Heim threw 4.2 innings for SMSU, giving up all six runs.  Chelsey Evans finished the game in relief.

Brittney Hallahan, Amanda Neumann and Borowiak each collected two hits.

SMSU got home runs from Neumann and Katie Turner and a three-hitter from Ali Honken to cruise to a 10-1 victory in Game 2.

Borowiak, Turner, Amanda Voss and Andrea Fennern each registered two hits.  Borowiak and Meaghan Laetsch finished with two RBIs apiece.

The Mustangs scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to set up a five-inning contest.  The surge gave SMSU a 10-0 lead heading into the fifth.  UMC managed to score one run in the top half of the frame.

Honken worked all 5.0 innings and fanned six batters; she moves to 6-8.

SMSU will host Minnesota State Moorhead tomorrow in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
